    What exactly will be banned?
Any configuration which currently requires a bullet button.

Previously the limitation was on firearms which have "the capacity to accept a detachable magazine" which DOJ rules defined to exclude magazines that need a tool (like a bullet tip) for removal.

Heres an 18in AR upper + lower assembly kit for $600 , find a compatible AR10 lower for 2-250 + a bullet button and you just shy of $1k

Sometimes youll get lucky and catch an Aero M5 here for $140

Shop good as new blemished AR parts & accessories & save on your next build without sacrificing quality when you buy Aero Precision blems.
      WTB:
      1)AR15 Aero Precision Skeletonized Lower
      2)S&W 686 6in barrel ...686 No dash through 686-4
      3) Saltworks M5 upper/lower set

Aero has got some blems up right now for less than $140. Will probably sell out in an hour though. Ah, looks like Mr.Caketown beat me to it.

Eventually, I would like a bolt gun, but with no hope of leaving CA until the kids are leaving for college (13+ years from now) I am looking for opinions on what you would suggest buying in the semi-auto/soon to be banned category.

I would like to stay around a grand, but am open to options. Obviously I will not be going for an LWRC, but a rifle a bit over the stated price would be considered.

          Thanks all!

I was in same boat as you. I already have a M1A and if I were rich, I'd get a SCAR, but Im not. So my compromise was a CMMG Mk3. Cost about $1500. It's not one of the ultra high end 308 ARs, but it's quality made and reliable. Fills my desire for a tacti-cool 308 semi-auto.

If you get just a receiver before the end of the year, don't leave a paper trail when you buy the parts. You don't want anyone to be able to prove you didn't have an "assault weapon" until after 2017 started.

I vote for the Mega Arms Maten - great receiver, especially the ambi versuin for the south paws here. Love my build.

I don't think I understand this. Except for the serial numbered receiver, you may change-out or upgrade any of the components of a RAW. So if there was a record of a part bought after the start of 2017, I don't see how that would matter, and it wouldn't prove that there wasn't some other part in place prior. The paper trail you will be leaving is the AW registration document for that serial number, the other bits are just parts, right?

This is the gotcha that people haven't figured out yet. A stripped lower does not meet the definition of an assault weapon. Even if you register it as an assault weapon, CA DOJ knows it was a stripped lower when you bought it. Don't be surprised if DOJ starts sending out letters in 2018 to people that purchased stripped lowers from 2014 through 2016 to provide proof they were a complete assault weapon as of 12/31/16. Sound crazy? It's no crazier than what happened this year. To be safe buy all your parts this year and keep the receipts.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

                        The PTR91

The brass will be 90% ok for reload. It just won't be pretty brass.

The AR-10 platform is replacing the M1A/M14 platform for a reason.

The AR-10 is all around better when you use quality parts to build it. It has a much higher potential for accuracy (as accurate as a bolt action rifle), uses much more common parts, has all of the recoil in line with the shoulder so it's far easier to use, has grips that are amazingly easy to use... Oh, and you can get one for between $600 and $900 without a problem.

As mags by magpul are now all over for the AR-10, it is a far better rifle to buy than an M1A.

In order to match the accuracy of a half decent free float rail AR-10 with a match trigger, which is a $1200 or less investment without scope, you need to spend ~$2000-$3000 on an M1A - and then you will never change out the barrel or most of the parts yourself without access to a full gunsmith shop.
Hunting is a loophole in the 2nd Amendment to the Bill of Rights.

There is no privilege to keep and bear arms.

Arms are for killing people. All other uses of an arm are illegitimate uses.

Please point me to an AR-10 for 600-900 dollars.

Since when can you get an AR10 for $600?

Right? These guys are just like "Get an Aero!" Where they are finding it is beyond me. Blems showed up on their website about 2 weeks back, they were sold out in 12 hours.
