.308 to buy b4 the ban

I have a Loaded M1a that I bought when the bill to ban pretty much all rifles with detachable magazines was on governor moonbeam's desk.

Now that it will pretty much be coming to fruition next year, I am wanting to add another .308 to the stable before the end of the year. Eventually, I would like a bolt gun, but with no hope of leaving CA until the kids are leaving for college (13+ years from now) I am looking for opinions on what you would suggest buying in the semi-auto/soon to be banned category.

I would like to stay around a grand, but am open to options. Obviously I will not be going for an LWRC, but a rifle a bit over the stated price would be considered.

    Thanks all!

edit . . didn't see your $1K budget . . . never mind the three above except maybe on a used PTR?

Just get a lower (Aero ) and PTR receiver or Fal Receiver and build it. That way you can get two / three instead of one.

I've heard good things about the Smith & Wesson M&P10. Pretty close to your budget too.

Windham Weaponry SRC308 Right around $1500 after all is said and done. In my opinion the Windham Weaponry line seems to have higher quality parts over Smith & Wesson.... I've seen enough M&P15's put back in the range bag to take home and work on before they bring them back out that I tend to stay away from them.

Aero stripped Lower. Build up later.

M1A & FALs are great open sight rifles. But 98 out of 100 new shooters just have to have a scope on their rifles. M1As & FALS with scopes attached are problematic as compared with a AR type flat top design.

I too have been hearing bad reports about S&W AR rifles. It didn't start that way but things have definitely changed.

For your pricepoint OP, get a PTR-91.
It's a great design copied from the H&K 91 and, IIRC built on H&K machinery.
                  Messes up your brass, though.

Sounds like stripped lowers are hard to come by right now. Armalite said they are not distributing any stripped lowers before the end of the year because they only have enough to use for the complete rifles they want to build and sell.

For $1000 you are limited to the PTR and maybe a used M&P10 or DPMS.

For $2,500 - $3000 you can get an LMT308MWS. Which is probably the best value right now since they are still readily available, tons of em on gunbroker.

I had a PTR and it was a nice accurate solid rifle but I hated the charging handle. It really ruins the design. It is small, sticky, and awkward to pull back every time to load a new mag. It was also heavy and kicked differently, more headache inducing than other 308s. I eventually traded it and decided to get another M1A which has its quirks as well but at least it doest have to have a maglock or be a RAW.
