It's only needed if your going to screw something like a muzzle break on it since the chance of getting suppressor in Cali is zilch.

A muzzle brake on a bolt .308 is dumb, but a flash hider is another matter...

24" is what I'd get unless you want the "scout" look.

Brake is nice. You can spot your impacts at a closer distance than without one.

+1. But it does make the rifle louder.

Can always just put a thread protector on it in case you might ever move to a state that allows suppressors...

Threading a .308 is largely unnecessary unless you're in the "tactical" crowd.

Go with the 24" barrel for a few reasons.
                      Extra weight reduces recoil.
Extra velocity gives flatter trajectory and less wind drift at distance.

Get a threaded barrel and put a muzzle brake on it.
The brake reduces the muzzle jump so that you can spot your own impacts.
Without a muzzle brake, it's common for the gun to jump off target and you will not be able to see where your bullet impacts.

                        Only to your range neighbors.
With normal hearing protection that most people wear while shooting, the shooter won't notice the difference with or without a muzzle brake.

Ignore the haters. They've never shot far enough, watched where their shots hit and had to make the adjustments. Threaded barrels are great and having a muzzle brake on it means that a spotter isn't necessary (though its helpful).

For the price of what you're looking to buy I wouldn't worry about having a thread on my barrel.
