Ain't that the damned truth. When I removed mine, the first 3 came out, the fourth in the rear had a screw head that stripped like it was made out of mashed potatoes. I'm not even sure how I was able to tighten it(the same as the others), since the bit just spun in the head with chunks of metal stuck to it(from the screw head) when I tried to remove it.Comment

This is why you get the Tikka for a good .223 or the MVP if you just want to plink. Once you start upgrading an R700, you start realizing that the gun might have potential and you rechamber it to something that delivers more than a bee sting.$1500 fpr the Tikka sporter.
$600 for the Rem 700.
You can do a LOT of customizing on the 700 for the difference in price...
$900 will get you almost any chassis system available.
The MVP is not even in the same LEAGUE as the 700 or the Tikka sporter as far as quality is concerned.Comment

I got the latest issue of american rifleman today and low-and-behold there is a write-up of the MVP.
This photo of the crown caught my eye so I just had to scan it...

Congrats on the MVP, they are very nice guns for the money.
For a scope the SWFA SS scope would be a solid entry level choice.Comment

Why would you ever remove a mount?Ain't that the damned truth. When I removed mine, the first 3 came out, the fourth in the rear had a screw head that stripped like it was made out of mashed potatoes. Because I felt like it?(and it would have needed to come off anyway) Regardless of how often people remove their rails, the crappy EGW screw head could have just as easily stripped while I was torquing it down.
I'd have figured mossberg would be capable of sending a rifle in better shape than that, to a reviewer. Eww. Was that picture taken just to show how terrible it looks? Or was there some other context?Last edited by Merc1138; 08-25-2014, 11:05 PM.Comment

I have removed and re-installed every factory mount I got... partly because I don't trust the factory to install it correctly.
I always remove, inspect, clean, and torque them down myself for piece of mind.
Sometimes its not needed and sometimes its is. My Ruger American was a good example of a poorly installed factory base.ExtremeXComment

I would take this as proof of the Mossberg review guns NOT being hand-picked, which I suppose is a good thing, but I still feel that the reviews are not partial as the magazine is running full page ads conveniently placed right by the review...
I did not read the article.
I just skimmed it and that picture jumped out at me as a "Holy Crap, I can't believe the tech people let that photo run" item...
The downside to the magazine review guns NOT being handpicked is that this is a legitimate example of the "typical" quality to expect on Mossberg guns.Last edited by ar15barrels; 08-25-2014, 11:12 PM.Randall Rausch

Well, that certainly sounds better for American Rifleman than it does Mossberg.I would take this as proof of the Mossberg review guns NOT being hand-picked, which I suppose is a good thing, but I still feel that the reviews are not partial as the magazine is running full page ads conveniently placed right by the review...
