Thoughts on a 223 bolt gun

Load some 52g smk. Really good at 100 yds.
Try inserting your magazine with the bolt open. That's not my photo (or magazine), but I noticed that inserting a fully loaded magazine (and getting it to catch securely), was WAY easier with the bolt open.
That all said, I'd have to say that the magazine catch is the weak point in this rifle - but I figure that's the cost to be able to use my pre-ban Colt 20-rounders. Glad to hear yours is accurate, I'm still trying to get around to getting some ammo loaded up to test with..Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

No need to break the bank on a .223. It's hard to mess that up. For longer range, get a longer barrel and faster twist. 500 yards is no problem plinking targets with 50 or 55 grain, but it starts to get blown out from there, so you'd want to use heavier bullets and use a scope that has a lot of elevation. You can push the heavier 77gr bullets pretty damn far, but they have quite a drop.Last edited by JMP; 08-25-2014, 8:29 PM.Comment

Option A: Want to "build" or tinker on a gun like you said...Rem 700 Tactical just like Randal said. Lots of choices for stocks, magazine feed systems, triggers. (On a side note I'd really like to say get the SPS Varmint 26" but the 1:12 twist in that barrel sucks for shooting the heavies)
Option B: Want a gun your going to open the box and shoot....Get the MVP. Has all the stuff you want on it already.Last edited by NorCalFocus; 08-25-2014, 10:50 AM.Comment

$1500 fpr the Tikka sporter.
$600 for the Rem 700.
You can do a LOT of customizing on the 700 for the difference in price...
$900 will get you almost any chassis system available.
The MVP is not even in the same LEAGUE as the 700 or the Tikka sporter as far as quality is concerned.Randall Rausch

Thanks for the feedback Ill cross the MVP off the list again.$1500 fpr the Tikka sporter.

Heres my issue. When I bought my Tikka T3 a few years ago I had a chance to cycle a 700. The difference in the bolt was night and day! The Rem was SLOPPY and rough. The Tikka was amazing! Its things like this that keep me leaning to the Tikka.Lions not sheep.

So ask yourself what is more important to YOU, a smooth bolt, or the abiility to customize. Thanks for the feedback Ill cross the MVP off the list again.

If it's more important to have a smooth bolt, then the tikka is the eaiser path.
If you would rather customize, then get the 700.
You can replace the bolt in the 700 with an oversized bolt to tighten up/smooth out the feel of it for a couple hundred dollars.Randall Rausch

I looked really hard at Tikka before I bought my 700. Your right the action on a Tikka is fantastic. But I can say after owning my 700 for a year and adding a larger bolt knob, my action is just as good.Comment

If you like to tinker the MVP is good because you'll most likely have to do some tinkering to get bolt to run smooth. It is very accurate though.Option A: Want to "build" or tinker on a gun like you said...Rem 700 Tactical just like Randal said. Lots of choices for stocks, magazine feed systems, triggers. If you want to tinker/modify the rifle get a Rem 700.
Then get a replacement stock and trigger. Send the barreled action out to be trued and rebarreled with a good aftermarket barrel. If you like have it threaded for a muzzle brake.
Then have the new stock glass-bedded , after having it set up for a detachable mag.
Then buy scope base and rings. Lap the rings and mount the scope.
Scope choice should be something like a Nightforce NXS or Leupold MK-4.
So what it amounts to is buy the Rem and toss everything but the action and build a rifle.
Or just get a Tikka and mount a scope on the factory rings and go shoot.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I can, and do, shoot up to 1500 meters from my front porch.
I live in Montana, you know, big sky, snow, 18 hours of sun in the summer and 3 in the winter?
I felled a super spruce tree that was about 6 foot in diameter.
I took some pieces of it (about 10 foot long sections) and placed them at intervals of 100-200-300-500-600-800-1000-1200-1500 meters from my porch and they have little flags that say the distance.
I did not laser the distance, I have a 300 foot tape measure and a 4wheeler and went all old school on it.
No one has ever complained about my shooting....even full auto belt dumps.
Of course my nearest neighbor is about 1 mile away and in the opposite direction from where I shoot.
I have no desire to shoot in any competition, for money or to prove anything.
I shoot for my own personal enjoyment, and to keep in practice.
Of course if the random muley buck, elk,or bear gets in the way....hey, shirt happens.Comment

Well shoot me! I bought the MVP. Went to the gun store and I think its just a lot of gun for the cash. Plus it will be a good starter for me as far as bunch guns go and learning loads.
If I get into it big time Ill do something more.
Now what glass?Lions not sheep.
