    ^^^ Well put.

1,000 yards is a LOOOOOOOOONG way. I've got a rifle that'll do it, not at the groupings you want and it's chambered in .338 Lapua. DEFINITELY NOT an economical shoot @ $4.00/round for the cheap stuff. The scope alone was roughly 2.5x your budget and I went the "budget" route.

Now, you didn't necessarily say you were going to hunt at 700 yards, but I'll pose the question; is that even ethical?

No I wouldn't ever take a shot on an animal over 300 yards, I don't think that would be ethical as the shot placement would be very important to not let the animal suffer. I just maybe thought the effective range of 7.62x51/.308 was out to 700-1000 yards. Just thought something that was a good hunting rifle that could also fuel my interest in hand-loading for medium range accuracy as a hobby on the side would be great.

I am looking at something sort of similar except don't want to hunt with it. My buddy was at the sniper's hide shoot and he's strongly of the opinion that .308 won't cut it at 1000 yards. The velocity is not high enough to keep it going flat that far out. They reckon the 300 win mag or 30.06 at that range if you want .30. I think the 7mm R Mag would be good. My choice and what I am building my kit around is .260 Remington which is quite similar to the latest 6.5mm target rounds.

Pulled from the web and all numbers depend on your loads and altitude and temp and etc...

At a muzzle velocity of 2650 fps, the 175-grain .308 has about 2700 ft-lbs of energy. At 1000 yards, it drops 380 inches (based on a 100-yard zero) and has 581 ft-lbs.

At a muzzle velocity of 2800 fps, the 139-grain .260 has about 2400 ft-lbs of energy. At 1000 yards, it drops 280 inches (based on a 100-yard zero) and has 748 ft-lbs.

Overall the 260 is flatter and retains more energy over a longer distance.

I would like to add that I like the Savage rifles very much. If you want to shoot groups, you need a heavy barrel and they sell a long range hunter that would do it, but I think if you are thinking first shot placement, you can get by with most of the Savage models. BTW this is the one application where barrel length is going to help you. if you can get 28 or 30" you going to like that although not hiking with it.

As a pure competition cartridge, he is right.
However, as a LEARNING TOOL, the 308 is the best thing going.
If you get good with a 308 past 800yds, you will be better equipped to shoot a higher performance cartridge.
Starting with a high performance cartridge will never make you as good of a shooter as someone who went through all the proper learning steps...

            Get a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 winmag.For a scope a Leupold 4x12 will work.That scope used will run $250
Switchbarrel who posted right off is the 2014 NBRSA 1000 Yard National Champion.I would take his advice and go to a match.

Yea I was thinking of, after I get my rifle, get better accuracy with a heavy 5r long barrel, but I don't know if I would want to modify a rifle I would use for hunting and make it heavier to carry. So kind of on the fence.

Would like to be recommended something that is economical and accurate, less than 2" group @ 700-1000 yards.

I would also like this rifle to be a good hunting rifle. I was thinking chamber of .270, .30-06, 7mm, or .308.

What would be a good rifle scope for that range? I have heard that you get what you pay for in scopes and skimping on a more expensive scope might make it ineffective to shoot at anything long range. My effective cost range is something less than $500ish.

I had a friend recommend a savage 11/111 long range, and yet another swear by his Remington 700 as a very accurate rifle at 1000 yards.

Any suggests would be greatly appreciated.
In all honesty, start with a bolt action .22 and when you are making groups at 100 yards, then start moving out.

^This is the best advice you can get. Plus, .308s get a lot more mileage before a new barrel and the rifle is easily rechambered to 6.5 CD.

The best learning rifle is a 22.

The only thing he will learn from a 308 is he shouldn't have bought a 308 for 1000 yards. Sure, it sucks ballistically, but what if he gets discouraged and hangs up the whole sport because his 308 windage reads kill him on scores.

That is the best reason for a 6.5 if he can find matches that shoot 1k consistently.

My assumption is that 1k matches are hard to find (because they have been hard to find for me even in an area where there are quite a few 1k ranges). I'd find a place that shoots some distance match, whatever match it is doesn't really matter as long as it's a distance match. Build a gun for that match and shoot it until you are good. The stuff you learn there will transition into all other shooting if you find that you really want to pursue shooting a match you have to travel for.

Cuyama shoots 1,000 yard matches, every other month on the Sunday after the 3rd Saturday of every month. The other months they shoot a modified Palma at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. For 11 month's out of the year you can shoot to 1,000 yards (May is the annual club workday). The Saturday before each match is a open practice day and the club allows people to dry camp out at the range on match weekends.

I've seen literally 100s of posts where people mention that they want to, are going to , or have built a gun for 1,000 shooting but I never see the posts where these people have actually shot 1,000 yards.
