Seems to be a bit or a tricky reloading die situation for the 6.5saum

Plus, where would I get a barrel in this?

Copper Creek and I'm pretty sure GAP has Redding die sets. There are custom die manufacturers like Whidden and Bob Green that can cut a FL sizing die from a fire formed brass or chamber specs. As for a barrel, pick your flavor of .264 diameter and call GAP. I'm sure they can tell you who else has a 4S reamer if you don't want them to chamber it. Your best bet is to call GAP.

How about a 26" barrel? I have a swede Mauser and I wouldn't load it hot. But it's got a long barrel, and I'm thinking the swedes knew something about that round. Perhaps just keep the 6.5x55 and get a longer barrel. That should add 200fps with the right powder without running above pressure.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Aww, i think you got me all wrong. I'm running a 28.5" right now, and getting between 2980 and 3035 depending on the accuracy node choice with Rl22 powder and 140 amaxs (don't say it's not possible if you havent done it). It's doing amazing. I agree that the Swedes knew something, and with modern actions we can actually utilize its potential. I've gotten 6 reloads out of my Norma brass so far and no signs after running at around/below 30-06 pressure levels (not suggested, use at your own risk).

I'm just trying to run another 6.5 cartridge and not go backwards. It's awesome though, only come up 3mils to 600 yards at Angeles. All this call this place for barrel, these people for dies, ask around about a reamer stuff seems like a lot of work for 1-200fps, but the real appeal to me would be the barrel life (expecting pretty low for my Swede) and the ability to possibly shoot 160's.
Not in a rush in building this rifle, tho. So may just see how the 6.5SAUM progresses.

Funny that the whole ask 10 6.x shooters what they like best and you'll probably get 10 different answers is playing out yet again. Nothing wrong with this, but this makes me wonder why a few ballisticians, physicists, or maybe even aero engineers haven't sat down together yet and figured out the "optimal" 6.x cartridge as dictated by current knowledge of physics and limits within material science. Maybe give 4 or 5 different sets of constraints/parameters (1 for accuracy under x yards, 1 over x yards, 1 for barrel life, etc) to go with for 4/5 diff final results. If people can build $10k-50k+ bench rest guns in stuff like 6ppu, I'm pretty sure their efforts would not go unrewarded... There has to be a better way than slowly and incrementally modifying what is essentially early 1900s technology when we have at least early 2000s tech easily and readily available.

With that being said, I will be asking this same question eventually so I guess I can't really say too much lol

The guy who designed the cartridge I posted about earlier was a rocket engineer at Morton Thiokol by the name of Bryan Smalley.

Dies for the 6.5 saum are available at midway and are made by Redding.Anyone who fits barrels can chamber one up.

I wish I could find a 6.5x55 700. Beautiful gun you have there.

I'm pretty sure they were a one time offering in the 'classic' offering for the 700 sometime in the early nineties.
Fantastic pairing of limited rifle in limited chambering.

Yup, 1994 only. I've kept the old stock and barrel (300 rounds) as well just out of respect for its history.

                        Thanks for the comments, guys.

Main reason im trying to avoid 6.5-284 is barrel burn rate, so some magnums are out.

The secret is a low operating pressure when downloaded. It will shoot a 140 grainer at around 3400 fps with max loads. By downloading to 3050-3100 fps you drop the pressure down and that lengthens barrel life. Dies are easy to find, Midway sells a Redding 3 die set. You can get 7mm SAUM brass from Midway as well and just run it through the sizer die and trim.

Doesn't the 26 Nosler pretty much fill the bill regarding FPS?

you can't look at it like that...so assume you get 5 good reloadings out of each...its $0.52 per lol.

wait....6.5x284 lapua brass is $1.16 per...so thats technically $0.23 per reload assuming 5 firings also...

                                DARN...still double the cost
