Savage 10 Problems - Manufacturer Defect?

So its been a few weeks that since the rifle got back to Savage. I received a message that they took the rifle out to the range and could not reproduce the problem. They said that they would be sending back the rifle asap. Their thought is that it was the fault of the wolf ammo and not being a fit for the rifle.

When you say, "received a message", did you actually speak to someone? The person doing the checking? Did they detail what they did to check it?
One would think they checked the headspace with a gauge, possibly even took the rifle apart to check things out (maybe just scoped it if the headspace was good...?). Interested to know what was done.

At this point, I would (reluctantly) assume the rifle should be good if they can't reproduce your issue or find anything wrong with it. What was the third ammo you tried, more inexpensive stuff? Blow the cobwebs out of your wallet and go buy some good, commercially manufactured AMERICAN MADE, BRASS cased ammo and see if it works. IE, Federal, Winchester, etc. If that doesn't work, I would call Savage back.

I have a White Oak AR that shoots my loads, Black Hills blue box etc, just fine. I tried using the Wolf stuff and the bolt gets stuck on unfired rounds nearly 30% of the time. Maybe the reloads you were using weren't resized properly .

I think that Savage sets the headspace REALLY tight on these rifles. I have a 10FP and the bolt closes "snug" on Federal 168gr GMM and closes even tighter on my handloads (sized with standard base Lee dies). I segregate and "neck-size only" for all brass used in this rifle. The up-side to this tight headspacing is that my brass lasts practically forever and it will shoot 5-round half MOA groups at 100 yards if I do my part.

I really think that if you want to shoot lower-priced ammo (like the Wolf), you need to move away from using what was intended to be a "high precision" rifle. Please don't take my comment on this as any kind of insult - because I own and shoot rifles in the same caliber that handle cheaper ammo as well. I think you should consider trading or selling the Savage and considering a rifle like the Ruger Gunsite Scout..

Ended up speaking to a rep there who knew very little about what they had actually done. Just that it was inspected and then tested on the range.

Blowing out cobwebs on the wallet might be the answer at least for a box or two. I might end up putting it in the classifieds, but first want to make sure she fully functions.

When you tried various ammo on the day it all went wrong, did you try any factory brass-cased rounds?

Did you ever get around to trying some different/better ammo?

If so, better or same result?

Sounds to me like it is clearly an ammo problem if savage could not reproduce the issue. Time to try different ammo as suggested above. Keep us posted on how it goes when you get the gun back. Good luck

Rifle came back. Shot the steel ammo out of it with no problems for +20 rounds. My guess is that there must have been powder or debris from the reload that had ruptured somewhere in the chamber or barrel. Either way in happy it's shooting fine again.
