Its because we are "leet" LOL!!

Boltguns translate = hunting rifles most of the time for most folks.

Precision rifle is a very small part of the competitive shooting arena from short range benchrest to tac precision rifle. It is growing, but just slowly.

I think some of the main reasons are

    Cost

Difficulty (does take a certain personality to get into it)

Limited places to shoot. Compare LR rifle matches to pistol and 3gun.

Lack of reloading components. To compete at the top levels you just have to reload...period. Or have a ton of money to buy custom match grade ammo.

Ammo Cost: Compare match grade pistol ammo to match grade rifle ammo.

LR Rifle shooting is NOT an action sport. Younger guys and gals tend to want to run around and shoot things like on TOP SHOT.

Some folks want to bang out a few hundred rounds in a day. We shoot 50 to 80 rounds max in a full day match.

      Maybe he means Fuddy Duds?

And happy to hear I'm not the only single shot fan out there!

It makes sense that there would be fewer discussions, and there's a lot less political activity surrounding bolt guns. Wait till De Loon figures out that somebody can pick him off from 1,000 yards away while he's waxing poetic about the dangers of "ghost guns".
Some bolts/shooters can be on target from 1760 yards (Hopefully I'll get there some day... imagine, taking your shot, getting up, go get a cup of coffee then you hear the steel ring out. Ok slight exaggeration but still. That's cool x10.

You nailed it right on the head though. The Leupold Mark 4 glass on my 110BA costs more than a respectable AR - COMPLETE and ammo is at $4.00/round for the cheap stuff off the shelf... that right there scares 99.9% of the shooters out there away. Reloading will cut that down to $.95-ish/round buying good Lapua Brass, but still. That's a steep price tag especially considering I'm 'only' in at the entry level. :O

Cerebral is EXACTLY the reason I'm getting into long distance shooting. I'm old school, "make every shot count". Don't get me wrong, I like spraying lead down range at from time to time, but man, putting something on target after you've dry fired 10,000x, done the math, mastered your body's reflexes, got control of your breathing, knowing when your heart is beating, waiting a few seconds until you hear the steel acknowledge you did it right, man... THAT is gratification.

It takes a mature individual to understand and appreciate the value of a bolt action rifle.

Nope. With bolt rifles you mount NV or Thermal. Flashlights are so early 2000s

I have enjoyed this forum since it was split off from the semi's. Yes, there are fewer posts but as others have mentioned, the quality and education factor of posts is higher. I'm one of those guys that does extensive searches before asking questions. By lurking here I learn a lot without having to search.

I also like shooting guns that are accurate whether it is a semi-auto rifle, bolt rifle, semi-auto pistol, revolver, or single shot. I shoot a 6mm BR that I built up myself just for fun. I do reload for accuracy and find it almost as enjoyable as shooting. I also have a precision AR that started me off on the accuracy quest.

Bottom line for me, keep this forum separate from the 3 gun fans.

(I don't even remember whether or not the longer bay at TM actually is even 25 yards)

The guns owned by civilians capable of 1,000 yard hits can only penetrate paper, and MAYBE cardboard if it is thin enough. The 1,000 yard stuff purely exists in the military and not in CA .

I think that was a joke about me getting banned a few years ago for telling the semi auto guys to keep their semi auto rifles out of the precision rifle picture thread...

I sneak into the semi-auto forum from time to time (without logging in) to see what some of the kids are up to. I seriously believe I could have marketed and sold a picatinney rail mounted toilet paper roll holder there.
