    Just 5% ?

My browser opens several sites on opening, this being one of them.

I've noticed that since the split of Centerfire into two forums, the number of people here are about 5% of the number on Semi-Auto.

I've owned ARs and AKs and others but have always dug target rifles. I know Calguns was sort of born out of the defense of magazine-fed semi-autos and the bullet button creation but lately it seems there's NO interest in bolt-yanking, gnat's-@ss level shooting...

Even the "Sacramento Valley Match" threads get about 20% of the posts they did two years ago.

Numbers generally don't lie, so I wonder why this is. I guess one should create a poll-thread over there and ask.

    What do you think?

I'm in the forum daily. I lurk the semi auto forum once in a while. But then I read a few post and remember why I love bolt actions so much.

      Just 5% ?

It's been a while since there have been any sniper shows on Military/History/Discovery Channel. I remember the rash of "bolty" threads when "Sniper: Inside the Crosshairs" aired.

I always lurk here, my favorite sub.

This sub forum might be slower, but the quality of posts is much higher. The number of "Which (rail/stock/upper/lower/red dot/grip/BUIS/buffer/sling/whatever) should I get?" threads you have to wade through there to read anything interesting can be frustrating.
It's not the flaming ruins; it's that you lit the fire.

Better answers, and typically better questions asked by people who at least tried to look up common information on their own first. Let's just go down the list of the semi auto threads...

ID'ng a random gun show junk upper.
              AR makes his shoulder dirty
Someone not quite clear on "swapping" an AK receiver
What scope mount to use with an AR
How to lube an AR(because there aren't enough results for that on google)
              New Sig556
              Fancy NiB BCG problems
              Which comp to use
              Cant get mags to fit
              Mini-14 needs warranty service
What to include in an AR build
Failure to understand an ejector(that happens to be busted)
              Possible saiga deal
              Crappy rimfire ammo
Is this mall ninja folding angled sights
The double barreled AR-15 for the 293rd time

That's not even halfway down the first page, it just kind if repeats ad nauseum. That's not to say the manually operated forum is perfect, there's lots of "which one to buy" threads that could easily be answered within a few minutes of just reading existing threads, but every forum is going to have that.

I pop in here and read all the time. Just sold my fancy precision rifle to another Calgunner, and hopefully he starts posting here. Hate that I sold it, but it was the only financially smart thing to do, and it means I won't be making any of the Sac Valley matches for a while.

I like it this way, seperating the forums was like skimming the cream off the top of the milk.

I'd guess that for alot of guys bolt guns = hunting. And it's something you take out once a year to sight in, then go hunt, put it back in the safe, wait for next season. and there's a hunting forum.

since this is "manually operated", lever guns goes along with cowboy shooting, and there's another forum for that.

.22's also have their own forum, bolt, lever, auto, etc.

lots of dedicated bolt shooters are c&r guys. there's another forum for that.

and it takes a decently considerable amount of money to enter the world of precision long distance shooting. I see the numbers that entry level gear runs and ouch!!! I've always been intrigued with long distance shooting, but for me, like probably alot of other guys, it falls down the list of things.

then of course there's the politics of it. bolt guns are down on the list of worries. there's the handgun roster issues, there's the AW crap, and things like that. most of us are thinking "10 years from now, I'll still be able to get a bolt..."

and lastly, there just aren't that many long distance ranges. I have two within an hour from me, but most ranges probably go to 100yds. so the opportunity to really extend the range is limited for many shooters.

and I'd guess that an awful lot of the guys here are younger, many are veterans and/or grew up in the glock/AR mode.

it's many things. culturally, we just don't appreciate accuracy like we used to.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

It's all the same to me single shot, bolt, autoloader revolver, overunder, side by side.there's a lot of knowledge out there it's just waiting for the right question.
