I dont even shoot 308 and said as much. I will say that the simplfied version from a long range shooter that I know said that shooting at medium ranges with 308 win was more accurate than 30-06. I can ask him tomorrow why he came to that conclusion and get back to you.

He does reload and competes so I defer to those opinions.

Similar loads (ie 168 grain vs 168 grain), a 30-06 will have about 3.5-4" LESS drop at 1000 yds than .308. Inside about 300-400 yds, there's very little difference. Now, if you're going to compare old milsurp 30-06 ammo to .308...well, that's just not a good comparison; it's something like 150 grain, and 30-06 doesn't show it's full potential until quite a bit higher than that. Both have a wide range of loads available off the shelf.

Either one will fill your bill. Savage has traditionally maligned by the gun press but the produce a fine product and are extremely accurate. Between those two, I would opt for Savage. As to caliber, either .223 or .308. I would go with .223. I own a bolt action .223 and it's a ton of fun to shoot.

Savage Model 11 or Model 10 with ACCU STOCK. Shoots under 1MOA out of the box................. no free floating the barrel, no bedding the action, etc. Or, a used 700 with all of the work done including a 2 stage trigger. 308 is a proven round for long range accuracy, as is 300 win mag. The big jump is to .338 lapua, then .50 BMG.

If you're getting into shooting for accuracy, .22LR, bolt action, 100 yards. When you can shoot MOA or less, consistently, go to the next step and buy the 308.

Which one of the Remington 700 line that has a floating stock design? The Remington 700 police? What's your opinion on this one? It's not chamber in 30-06 though. I wanted the 30-06.

I don't think Remington offers any heavy barrel model in 30-06.

                Hmoob, where are you located?

Also my opinion, if you want to shoot long range precision, get into reloading sooner than later. The difference in factory ammo vs hand loads in nuts.

Cali .... so I guess I have to find another quality brand that offers the 30-06 for 1000 yard capable rifle.

Just the opposite, the 30-06 can shoot the big heavy bullets with a better BC. If you are not handloading, you are not going to have much success in long range shooting. Target shooters aren't going to use Mil-surp, well, not winning shooters anyway.

It works, it's just not the preferred round for 1000 yard shooting. It's just OK, but very popular.

i think were all on multiple forums, calguns is the highest grade of a community for us to share information and knowledge, why dont we skip the part of breaking "noobs" down about their terminology and get straight to educating them on how it could one day be crucial how we refer to our firearms.

ie- in tough times of being an owner of a firearm, we really need to watch what we refer to our firearms such as being "sniper rifles", "assault rifles", "capable of popping heads or dropping two legged creatures out to 1000 yards". back to the OP's question, yada yada yada this rifle does this and this round can do that.

calguns is better than all the other forums and well known nation wide for top tier members and endless amounts of great info, we need to keep it that way. flaming people over something non-intentional is NOT how we maintain a great community. get straight to educating someone on something they got wrong, dont build up to it with useless banter and rude remarks.

Meh, the .308 thing gets blown out of proportion for a number of reasons. I admit, I didn't know much about guns at some point (I'm still learning), but I went through a ".mil knows all, if they use .308 it's because it's the best" phase a long time ago. I imagine that other people that don't follow benchrest or practical rifle shoots think the same thing.

"Mil switched from .30-06 to .308, therefore .308 must be better."
"Mil snipers hit targets 1000 yards out with .308 and 10x scopes, that's the hot setup."
"Mil snipers use factory ammo, if I use the same ammo I can win all the matches."
