30-06 has killed every animal out there..... Yes every. Eficent as some others no. But it will get the job done and you can buy ammo at any store.
Why does the OP need a big heavy *** rifle?Comment

As others have mentioned, the purpose must be known before the question can be answered. If it's hunting, the 7mm will take anything in the lower 48. The .300 extends that to include all of North America....
IMHO, either one would be great at targets - much better than I am.Comment

I'm looking at this thread with interest, 'cause I'm contemplating a similar purchase. The .300 WM has more punch, sure. But there's also a video of a precision shooter's 12-year-old son taking his first bull elk with a 7mm RM at just over 1,300 yards. The kid's first shot was just a bit low, missed the animal. Held up just a wee bit higher and fired again. The second shot got it right in the boiler room. Mr. Wapiti took a few drunken steps and collapsed. DRT.
This kid and the rest of his family apparently practice regularly at such distances, 'cause the family has such a range on their land (major envy here). What this tells me is that as long as the arrow's of decent quality, the Indian shooting it matters a lot more."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

Well the 300 Mag doesn't necessarily have more punch. The 7mm has the same and in many instances it has more energy especially at long range. It depends on the specific loads you compare but the 7mm has a better sectional density as well, and that translates into more penetration in most instances.Comment

300 wm hands down
I have all four in my collection -- 7mm, 280 rem, 30-06 and a 300wm
they're all a little different but the 300wm is the most versatile- if you hand load.
the variety of .308 bullets is vastly more available. it can be loaded light bullet with a hot load and scream for distance. or a heavy load set right for maximum punch.
if you're worried about recoil get a brake on it. either way it can be deadly accurate and a great gun in any arsenal. hunting or plinking.Comment
