7mm Rem Mag vs .300 Win Mag

I'm trying to choose between one of these for a future precision rifle build on a Rem 700 platform. What's the difference between them?
Can anyone supply numbers on ballistic/terminal performance and cost?

Not trying to be a jerk here, but I find google to be much more help with these sorts of questions as you will likely find several threads from many different forums on the subject, as well as info from other media outlets.

    Good Luck.

Also, there is a sticky thread on caprc.com that has good info on caliber selection.

7mm hands down. Shoot Berger 168 and 180 and you get more velocity more energy less drop and less windage than most 300 Mag loads. I love the 300 Mag but I'm making the switch right now to the 7mm. Less powder less recoil and lower pressures too.

Is this for target practice or hunting?

        If for hunting, tag.

            300 wm fan here.
            Selection of bullets.
            cost of ammo.
            Selection of ammo.
And the military uses the 300 wm not the 7mm mag.
7mm mag is also becoming less common for the reasons listed above.

300 Win Mag. You can shoot heaver bullets, and no barrel throat erosion.

I disagree wity bout everything you just said.
                Cheaper to reload
                Plenty of ammo
                Plenty of choices
Mil has used 7mm RM for decades for SS
And is be becoming more popular then ever.

And the military uses .338 Lapua and 50 BMG so.... But if I recall correctly, the secret service snipers use 7mm magnum.

Comparing the cost of two identical brands of match ammo, they're exactly the same!

Velocity data taken from Midway USA links. All information listed is theoretical. Chart information courtesy of JBM Ballistics: http://www.jbmballistics.com/

Theoretically on paper, it appears 7mm Remington is superior once you start getting past 400 yards.

For hunting I like the 300 Ultra Mag, you can hand load it from mild to wild.

And everything i just googled said the secret service did use the 7mm mag but is going to the 300wm. Which justifies my statement that the 7mm rem mag is becoming less popular. I didn't say that the 7mm mag wasn't a good design, but being more common is much more important.

The 7mm held the accuracy record - in my 70's Sierra reloading manual. 300 is a newer/current choice for one of the US sniper arsenal. Their 300 load is not available to the public. There was an article on it in the Sept 2013 American Rifleman.
Shooting paper or Calif game the 7mm would win. If you're trying to drop some bad guy past 1000 yards then go for the 300.

There's no way possible that a 100 year old cartridge can meet today's shooting needs. And with what?? A bolt rifle, 19th century technology no less.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
