.300 Win Mag. Can be loaded up, and way down with Trail Boss, lot's of bullet selections. Pairs up nicely with a .308. What's not to like?

How many rounds of either cartridge have you already fired?
I recommend you find someone who will let you fire their gun and buy a box of factory ammo.

Respectfully, how have you narrowed down to these two choices if you don't already know the differences?

Most people go through this when deciding on a long range rifle. All the 30 cal. magnums and smaller diameters. Personally i like the longer neck on the 7mm and less recoil and i hate the belts on all of them. But cartrige popularity is the most important thing to me. 223, 308 Winchester are even better. But the bottom line is that 300 win mags are more common than 7mm mags. And 7mm mags are becoming even less common. So i went with the 300 wm.

You can make it to 1000yds with out the extra recoil and cost of a belted magnum cartridge. A 308 bolt gun is a great place to start if your shooting factory ammo. If you reload there are several great 6mm and 6.5mm options available.

I don't see enough information on what you want to do with the gun. I don't know a hunter that takes the four hundred or over shot and very few that take the 300 yard shot.
Building for competition there are a lot of good places to get the latest and greatest information on who is winning and what are they shooting.

Three basic uses hunting, punching paper, work related. If I am missing what you want please straighten me out I missed it.

That's what I love about the shooting community, ask a simple question and instantly get 13 opinions from 12 people. Seriously, that's a very good thing.

Major use would be for long range bench work, with the possibility of N. American big game.
I'm leaning towards the 7mm. Reasons: I reload so ammo costs aren't as much a concern; the .300 would be using different weight bullets then my .308 so I wouldn't be economizing there; checking around there's plenty of old 7mms for cheap; and ballistics data seems to favor the 7mm at longer ranges.

If you have other 30 cal rifles yo can shoot the same bullets,
                            e.g. 168 gr work well 308, 30-06 300wm

The 230 Hybrid kills anything out there period. Its got a .7 BC and sticks with 338 up too 1500 ish, then the big 338 pulls away. Ohhh ya its ALOT cheaper too.

I'm partial to the 300, just because I've had a few of them and have all the gear to load it already, including Giraud case holder. But I am looking to buy a new open space muley rifle in the spring, so I may have to think hard about it!
