    Savage model 99

Was wondering what you guys thought about this rifle. I have a couple savage rifles but I am looking for more of a classic. I have always loved lever action rifles and currently own a Winchester model 1894 in 30-30. Looking to expand my options and was thinking an early model 99 with the rotary mag would be nice. I know Savage made this rifle for a long time and made it in many different calibers. What is your preferred caliber and application. Also what is a good price point for one of these rifles in good fit and finish? Also post some pictures if you got love for this rifle.

I just picked up a newer one in .308 has a dbm. Haven't shot it yet but it looks sexy and feels nice. From my research the 300 savage gets the most love of the older 99s. They're also starting to creep up in price. I definitely recommend picking one up my dad spoke very highly of his. I chose .308 for ammo commonality if that's not a concern for you there are several calibers to choose from. Good luck :-)

Spitzer bullet in a lever gun!
My daughter liked my little 99 .25-35 so much that I gave it to her.
She still lets me fire it when we visit her family up in Oregon. A great, light fun to shoot rifle with that caliber.

I was kinda leaning toward the 300 savage. I do however own a Ruger M77 in 308 and love it. Depends on price point. Love those two rifles by the way thanks for sharing osis32. Whats a good price like 500? I have an Alpine M1 carbine I would love to trade for one if anyone is interested?

I honestly couldnt tell you. I paid about 450 for that one off gb. it depends on the age style if its in original condition etc. Im all about ammo commonality and I know I wouldnt have anything else in .300 savage. check out gb see what theyre going for.

The Savage 99 is a working gun and most show it. The blued steel receiver was a pretty natural carrying point and tends to show wear. And quite a few had recoil pads added to them +50 years or so ago.

I think a nice looking one in 300 Savage will run about $600.00. I have a 1950's made one in that caliber with an old Williams peep sitting under a vintage 4X with post scope. The 300 Savage comes in a bit more powerful than the 30 WCF, and just under the 308.

Thanks for the input guys. Any pictures of your model 99's is appreciated. I would really like to find one that hasn't been messed with too much. meaning no added sights and not drilled for scope mount. Problem is looks like a lot of them have been modified. Definitely not a deal breaker, though it would be nice to find one unmolested with iron sights.

$600 for a nice condition one is probably fair. My dad sold off a few recently and ended up keeping one of them.

308 and 300 savage are probably the most common.

                      Ugliest lever gun ever manufactured.
However, it might be the most comfortable lever gun I've ever shouldered. I'll add one to my collection someday.

I agree not the prettiest lever gun but probably the most unique. I love the bullet counter on the rifle kinda feel like its and idiot light but still a neat idea. My brother has one in .243 but its a newer model with the detachable box mag. I went to 4 seasons outfitters in SLO and they had one but they cut the stock for a kid and it felt super short the wood was in need of some love too and they wanted 500$. I was kind of a jerk and offered 250$. Gun broker has a decent selection probably gonna try and find one on there that hasn't been too molested.
