I know you said you wanted a wood stock but Remington makes the 700 Long Range in .30-06. It comes with a 26” heavy barrel. That combined with a good brake should help cut down on the recoil.

Or a Rem 74x/740x/750. Would be used but I've seen clean example at LGS and gun shows.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It is interesting as I looked into more 30-06, other than BAR and M1 garand, there isn't really any current semi-autos for that cartridge. I think it would be really good someone comes up with a "DMR" style for 30-06. Sorry to digress into semi-autos, this is the manual rifle forum. I can move the discussion there.

.30-06 needs a long action. There are a couple long action semis, but short action semis are more efficient. Smaller and light mags, etc.

Anything but a BAR would be used. Outside of military rifles, in the used market you're looking at the BAR or a Remington 74x/74xx/75x series.

Those are long bolt throws. But, not much different from a semi-auto 12G with a 3.5" shell.

Bergara Timber is far from "old school." It's only been around for 5 years or so.

Someone has made a ar style rifle that uses 30-06. The demand however is not huge, so I don't know if it is in current production or remember the name offhand.

I shot a Rem mod 742 in 30-06 for years. Ran flawlessly.

Saw this at Sportsman warehouse, never had a stainless barrel rifle before, is the glare in sunny condition a concern?

No more so than a good blued barrel. You would be fine.
