30-06 Bolt Action with threaded barrel

An older relative left me a stash of his 30-06 ammo, most seems to be Federal American Eagle 150 grain FMJ box says $6.99 for 20 rounds, anyone know what years those could be from? I don't have any rifles in 30-06, looking at Bergara because I am recoil sensitive so need threaded barrel so I can put a muzzle brake. Really liked the Bergara Timber with nice looking walnut stock. Looking for something "old school" yet modern.

I picked up the tikka t3x rough tech. It?s got a threaded barrel, but a plastic stock in sorta a flat dark turd color. Still it feels a bit better than the regular tikka plastic stock, and stocks can be replaced (although the barrel profile is a bit heavier than a standard sporter, something to be aware of). Not a perfect match for your desires, but it could get there and the rifle shoots pretty nice and has a nice (not amazing, but nice) trigger and a smooth action.

Any rifle can be threaded pretty easily by any competent gunsmith. Haven't shot a Bergara specifically, but I have shot Remington 700's, Winchester 70's, Ruger Americans, and Savage 110's. All are fine rifles, though since you're recoil-sensitive, I would recommend a somewhat heavier rifle.

For your specific situation, I would suggest any of the following, in no particular order, preferably with a wooden riflestock. All of them are equally good.

      1.) Winchester 70
      2.) Weatherby Vanguard
      3.) Howa 1500

Note that the Howa 1500 and the Weatherby Vanguard are pretty much the same rifle; Howa, a Japanese armsmaker, makes the Vanguard for Weatherby and thus the Vanguard is simply a "Weatherby-ized" version of the 1500.

Additionally, ammo matters. There are two common factory loadings for the .30-06. One is the original military loading developed for the M1903 Springfield back in the day; these days, they're also called, "M1 Garand" loads. The other common loading is the full-power "hunting" loads that you see in the Walmarts, Big 5 Sporting Goods, and so on.

For you, I would recommend that you use M1 Garand-style loads for your recoil sensitivity. Also, I would recommend that you keep the brass and consider handloading your own .30-06 rounds. This way, you can tailor the load to whatever power level you want. The .30-06 is such an amazingly flexible round that you can go from really mild to pretty wild.

One of the milder loads is Ed Harris's famous "The Load", which is 13.0gr of Alliant Red Dot powder under a 150gr bullet. Alternately, 16.0gr of 2400 under a 150-180gr bullet does well in most rifles.

Do any of the boxes specifically say M1 or Garand on it? If so, it would be a great excuse to pick up an M1. The Garand is a fun rifle to shoot and it’s heavy enough to limit to limit recoil.

Must be a pretty large stash of ammo to justify a new rifle purchase.

Who am I kidding? I'd buy a gun for one box of ammo!

There's a version of the Weatherby Vanguard that comes with a threaded muzzle.

Can't waste a perfectly decent box of random ammo!

                +1 on reloading ammo.

30-06 is incredibly versatile with projectiles from 90 -220gr.

This one has a threaded barrel for muzzle brake.
Bergara B-14 Ridge 30-06 Springfield SG/Gray Bolt Action Rifle - 24in - Although there are many rifles on the market today, Bergara wanted to focus on one thing: quality. Bergara B-14 rifles were inspired by the desire to bring the quality that Bergara was known for in the custom rifle world to production rifles made for all hunters. In the B-14 rifle, you will find a level of craftsmanship that surpasses all of the other production hunting rifles on the market. The B-14 Ridge rifle features a molded synthetic stock made of glass fiber reinforced polymer. As with the entire B-14 Series, the Ridge brings Bergara Barrel accuracy to a line of hunting rifles that is affordable to serious big-game hunters. Built in Spain at Bergara highly automated and efficient barrel factory, this rifle delivers a level of quality and performance that is unmatched in its price range. The world-renowned Bergara barrel on this rifle for hunting whatever your heart desires is complemented by Bergara own super-smooth B-14 Action, which is a two-lug system with a sliding plate extractor and a coned bolt nose and breech to ensure a smooth feeding and extraction of the cartridge. It’s also outfitted with a Bergara curved trigger we designed to guarantee a crisp, clean pull every time you fire the rifle. It has been factory drilled and tapped to fit Remington 700 style rings and bases. The Bergara Ridge comes with a #5 4140 CrMo steel barrel and has a Graphite Black Cerakoted finish. Our stocks are bedded with integral pillars for stability and enhanced accuracy. The barrel is threaded 5/8×24 to accept muzzle brakes or suppressors. During the molding process, solid epoxy pillars are permanently molded into place, providing a secure and stable bedding surface for the barreled action. The base color is dark gray with white and black flecks. A SoftTouch coating gives the stock soft, tacky feel that is easy to grip even in harsh weather.

Now you have no excuse not buy a new rifle.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

If you are in the los angeles area or don't mind visiting the area for an hour, I can thread almost any bolt gun and fit a brake to the barrel while you wait.

                          Here's a decent Tikka:
Tikka T3x Lite RoughTech 30-06 Springfield Green Sniper Gray Cerakote Web Bolt Action Rifle - 22.4in - All the benefits and performance of a T3x Lite model combined with a Roughtech stock. The rough surface texture provides a solid grip throughout the stock in all weather conditions. Muzzle brake is included for recoil reduction.
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

It's a muzzle BRAKE, not a muzzle break. Or is your muzzle tired?

American Eagle 150 grain FMJ is blasting ammo, I wouldn't bother shooting it out of a bolt gun. Can't use it for hunting either. I would buy a M1A1, FAL, or PTR91, or AR-10.

M1 Garand eats 150 grain .30-06 FMJ, has a threaded barrel (you'll need Garand-specific attachments), moderate recoil, and a walnut stock (though some are birch). Not strickly a bolt action, but meets your requirement of "old school yet modern".
