Barreled Action, Howa 1500

I bought a heavy barrel Howa 1500 in .243 Win on closeout for $350 in a Hogue green stock in 2019.

I pulled it out of the stock and dropped it into a KRG Bravo chassis (which cost a little more than the rifle) and have been using it ever since for range plinking.

The KRG Bravo is nice for me aesthetic wise because it looks more traditional than some of the newer pistol grip chassis while still offering me AICS magazine support. I wish I could have found a .308win for that price but what?s one more caliber to stock when it shoots so easy.

Been watching Ron Spomer lately, and the .243 winchester caught my eye.

The one bad thing about Howas is if you want detachable mags, your choices are limited. The plastic setup Howa sells is a little on the flimsy side. I don't know is anyone sells an AICS setup.

I have the Atlasworx AICS on all my Howa/Weatherbys and they are much better than the plastic ones that howa makes.

How much inletting did you have to do?

It was very little inletting. Just the thickness of the metal of the mag well on the sides.

I recently traded a Howa 1500 24" threaded heavy barrel chassis rifle that I put together a few years back. This is what I was going for:

I got the rifle with a Hogue stock from Turners.

I took the action out and put it in a chassis made by Accurate Mag which uses AI pattern mags. I don't think it is made anymore.

I used an XLR tactical stock and ergo grip to complete the build.

It was very accurate.

Getting enamored of the Howa 1500 H-S Precision in .308 win. The H-S Precision stock seems well made and rigid. I think this would be a better buy off the bat than just getting a barreled action.

Politics aside, HS precision makes great stocks.

I hate to be the guy that recommends something other than what you asked for, but as a dude who primarily shoots factory ammo due to various life/time constraints, I would advise you to go .223 over .308. You can get decent grade ammo a lot cheaper, and if it’s just for punching paper it’ll be a lot more enjoyable on a bench too.

Waa going to recommend the same. For 200-300 yard, I'd go .223. Howa mini action looks great. Smaller holes, sure. But off the shelf ammo for 40cpr, makes it AFFORDABLE to shoot. .308 would be $1 every trigger pull just about.
