Wow, really, the Oryx chassis with the heavy barrel on the Howa??? Now I am getting excited.

Thanks man, that's what I will look for! Shsssssh, I have to keep this a secret from my family, as I just bought a Lipsey's Exclusive Ruger 10/22 Sporter with the stainless 22 inch barrel-just took it home from the 10 day wait period March 5, I think. He he he, nothing like a childish excitement like buying a new toy. And I am already 66 years old on the 28th.

      Just throwing this out there...

My mid 1980's Rem700V 308Win has shot subMOA since new with quality ammo or reloads. Stock rifle, Leupold 1 piece mount, and a couple different scopes. I generally run Federal Match 168gr, or reload with basically the same; Federal or Lapua match brass with a 168gr matchking over 4064.

Have shot Ruger 77V's from same era that shot very well too.

There are new heavy/varmint weight rifle that shoot MOA with good ammo out of the box. You'll sometimes see older rifles that do the same on the used racks of the LGS if you're patient.

You might consider a budget friendly rifle, and buy more ammo/reloading supplies...

The Howa factory chassis rifle does not take AICS magazines.
Howa has their own proprietary flimsy plastic magazine.

If you want to use AICS magazines, you are going to need an aftermarket chassis so plan to buy a heavy barrelled action and then a separate aftermarket chassis and put it together.

If you would consider a 6.5 Creedmoor instead, then look at a Ruger Predator that comes setup for AICS magazines:

Hey Randall, I notice you recommending the Ruger brand on a few threads. Care to educate me on this? Its an honest request as my head is spinning now. I've written on a piece of paper why I must buy the Howa 1500. I went and browsed Sniper's Hide or something like that and been reading the bickerings of people there back and forth between Remington 700 vs. Howa 1500. Then I came back to my thread here, and I saw the Ruger brand. I also like Ruger and Remington.

Just that my senior citizen brain is on an information overload.

Thank you every one. I am trying to digest all your feedback.

                  Value for the dollar.

When you are shopping in the $500 price range, there's just not much difference in quality across all the offerings from different manufacturers.
You are really looking for features at a price point.

You won't get an AICS magazine setup from Howa at the price range you are looking because they simply don't offer one.
I offered up an AICS compatible rifle that DOES come in the price range you are seeking.

I have bought a bunch of different sub $500 class rifles so I could play with them in person.
                  I have a Remington 783, a Ruger American, a Stevens 200 and a Howa 1500 for comparison.
Any of them will do just fine for basic hunting or plinking duty.
We are really arguing fine points when we confine ourselves to a specific price point and desired features lists.

I have nicer guns and old guns as well and you really can see how bolt actions have changed when you cover the ground that my reference collection covers.
Here is a cleaned down list (removed all the duplicates) of my reference actions on hand to give you an idea of where my opinions are coming:

Sportsman's Warehouse has something called a "Howa 1500 Hogue Black" that comes with a 26 inch heavy barrel for $630. The stock is probably the same as the other Howas, but being black signifies the gun is tactical or something. It does have a high-speed bolt handle.

Realistically, for the stated purposes, there's nothing wrong with an out-of-the box Howa. They come with a MOA guarantee, and the plastic mags will work at the range and bench. It's not like OP is shooting PRS and slamming the mag into barricades and such. I have a .223 Howa that came with a 10 round detachable mag. It seems fine, just not suited for abuse. For 300 yard shooting OP doesn't need a chassis.

Edit: I don't know if the lack model comes with a detachable mag, you can check at the store. The good news is Howa sells the detachable setup dirt cheap. Like 90 bucks for the plastic trigger guard/mag housing/bottom "metal" and a mag.

But wait! There's a kit I've never seen before from Atlasworxs that uses real AICS mags, if you really want those. The bad part is it says there might have to be some inletting done.

Avoid Atlasworx bottom metal like the plaque that it is.

I got a Howa barreled action in 6mm from Brownells years ago for $200. Brownells tends to throw the barreled actions on sale a couple times a year

Lucky you. Nowadays, the barreled action from Brownells start over the $400.00 mark on SALE. And they always ran out quickly.

I bought a heavy barrel Howa 1500 in .243 Win on closeout for $350 in a Hogue green stock in 2019.

I pulled it out of the stock and dropped it into a KRG Bravo chassis (which cost a little more than the rifle) and have been using it ever since for range plinking.

The KRG Bravo is nice for me aesthetic wise because it looks more traditional than some of the newer pistol grip chassis while still offering me AICS magazine support. I wish I could have found a .308win for that price but what?s one more caliber to stock when it shoots so easy.
