New 22-250?

I have the 788 rifle in 222 Remington and as a 7-08 carbine. I also have a Cooper 21 in 222 Remington, single shot. I paid about $300.00 for the 788 and it came in a box with the hardware store tag still on it - about $100.00 IIRc.

The Cooper will when fed right outshoot the 788 on paper. The 788 shoots everything well. A Sierra 52 grain BTHP and 19.8 grains of IMR 4198 will hit anything I aim at out to 250 yds. The 788 does as well with plain old factory ammo too.

Small groups on paper are nice. But whatever ground hog or tin can or clay pigeon happens to be within range is a goner with the 788.

The Ruger 77V is a varmint model, isn't it? That means a heavy barrel and might exceed your 7 lb weight goal. I have a Kimber varmint model in .22-250 that took a lot of rounds to break in but shoots very well now. The issues I had with it are too many to include here, though. For walking around, I have a CZ 527 American in .223 that is a joy. It is about the size and weight of a .22 rimfire. It does not come in .22-250, however.

You "might" want to shop around for a Rem 788 in 22-250.

That is what my 22-250 is. Birch stock, pencil barrel, fastest lock time of any factory rifle, inexpensive by most standards, not pretty. But most important. DEAD NUTZ FIRST SHOT ACCURATE. By that, I mean 5 shots into 1 1/8" @ 200 yds. Cold barrel 5 min. wait between shots.

As a hunter, that is my bench procedure. to ascertain where that FIRST shot from a cold barrel is going to land.

You will not find one for the $74.95 that I paid for mine in 1973 at Woolworths. But they do come up for sale from time to time.

Considering that rules of thumb, don't take into consideration that not all thumbs are created equal. Thumbs and rifles are individuals.

My own 1/2 MOA best group at 200 yds. with my 788, 22-250 was with Sierra 62 gr spitzers. That I paid something like $2 a pound for as "seconds". I never tried anything heavier. No need to.

At that time my BIL had a Rem 700 BDL HB Varminter in same 22-250. And my rifle consistently grouped better than his.

Maybe we can email a request to RemChesVageGer if they can add a 1/8 twist 22-250 model in their Varmint or LR line up. Savage has a 1/9 twist 223 Rem, but that will require a new bolt face (extractor, ejector) and a reamer. Easiest way is to rebarrel an existing rifle. Then again why go through all that when a 6mm or 6.5mm is available that will surpass all fast twist 22-250 performance with a bit more recoil of course.

Good luck! I have always toyed with the idea of a 788 as their reputation for accuracy is so good. I would probably look for a .308 or 7-8 as I have the varmint rifle category pretty well filled.
