If you plan to hunt at all (including varmints) in CA then you need a faster than traditional barrel twist due to the increased length of non-lead bullets for a given bullet weight. Also, I’ve found that only the fairly expensive lathe-turned monolithic copper bullets shoot as well as Berger or Sierra copper jacketed lead target bullets.

No hunting other than occasional upland birds, and I don't do much of that.
The 22-250 will simply be a desert shooter/plinker, hence, no heavy barrel or benchrest type stock.

Browning BLR lightweight @6 1/2 lbs. Great accuracy and fast to work the lever for follow up shots. Running targets that get scared up while walking may need an extra try or two.

Very slick action out of the box.

I have a Remington VLSS in 22-250 and that darned slow rate of twist is a reason I wish I'd paid more attention before buying - too slow if the reason for going 22-250 is shooting heavier bullets. If the goal is 50 to 55 grain bullets fast as heck, OK. But I wanted to do +62 grains and the 1-14 doesn't work.

You "might" want to shop around for a Rem 788 in 22-250.

That is what my 22-250 is. Birch stock, pencil barrel, fastest lock time of any factory rifle, inexpensive by most standards, not pretty. But most important. DEAD NUTZ FIRST SHOT ACCURATE. By that, I mean 5 shots into 1 1/8" @ 200 yds. Cold barrel 5 min. wait between shots.

As a hunter, that is my bench procedure. to ascertain where that FIRST shot from a cold barrel is going to land.

You will not find one for the $74.95 that I paid for mine in 1973 at Woolworths. But they do come up for sale from time to time.

I have the 788 rifle in 222 Remington and as a 7-08 carbine. I also have a Cooper 21 in 222 Remington, single shot. I paid about $300.00 for the 788 and it came in a box with the hardware store tag still on it - about $100.00 IIRc.

The Cooper will when fed right outshoot the 788 on paper. The 788 shoots everything well. A Sierra 52 grain BTHP and 19.8 grains of IMR 4198 will hit anything I aim at out to 250 yds. The 788 does as well with plain old factory ammo too.

Small groups on paper are nice. But whatever ground hog or tin can or clay pigeon happens to be within range is a goner with the 788.

A cheap youth model savage axis in 22-250 sale at bass pro shop starts the 26th think there $350ish each out the door if you buy a few really light stock and you can basically beat it up . I just got the rebate from the last sale so even cheaper. Last one I bought is my profile pic
