New Winchester model 92 short rifle

I don't think you can make these shoot any better, at least mine. I've never held a gun that was made as good as these are. So let's remove the tang safety and rebounding hammer.
Put some Color Case Hardened on the receiver, forend cap and butt stock plate. Would you color the lever too? What else?

The wood is a nice walnut and you don't like the redish colored wood that we see on some of the "restored" guns we see these days..

What would you do if you were to fix up a new Winchester the way you wanted.

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

The takedown trappers are pretty neat.

I personally would recommend adding 454 Casull to the lineup. The action is plenty strong for it and it would make a dandy compact hunting rifle (could take .45 Colt as well).

        My bad,

Let's say you already have this same gun (pictured) in 45 long colt and you wanted to send it to a smitty and have it done your way and open to suggestions..the tang safet and rebound hammer are the first to go...

What else would you want to do..

I like the idea of 454 Casull

I’d fit it with a synthetic stock, drop the original iron sights and go with a ghost ring setup, mount a EIR low powered optic with QR rings, install a short section of rail to the left side of the fore end for a light, and add a Rhodesian sling.

If the sky were the limit...
In addition to what you have identified (Rebound hammer and safety) I would take the 1892, make a short barrel rifle with a barrel length of 12".

Rare 12 Inch Barrel Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Trapper Saddle Ring Carbine with ATF Exemption Letter and George Madis and R.L. Wilson LettersManufactured in 1912, this Winchester M1892 SRC has the extremely rare 12 inch barrel. The accompanying letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic. This carbine's serial number is listed in the BATF Firearms Curios or Relic List on page 40. The included George Madis letter authenticates this carbine with an original factory 12 inch barrel. The included R.L. Wilson (photocopy) letter also authenticates this carbine and "ranks [it] as an extremely rare and desirable Winchester, worthy of the finest private or museum collection." According to Madis, "only one of each 325 carbines were made with shorter than standard barrels." Most of the baby carbines were shipped to Mexico and South America where they saw hard use. Very few have survived. In fact, it has been estimated that about five Model 1892s with 12 inch barrels exist; five 12 inch barreled 1892s, including this one, are listed by the BATF as being "cleared." The carbine features carbine sights, two-line address/patent dates marking and "38 W.C.F." on the left side of the barrel, factory oval proofs on top of the receiver and barrel at the breech, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, three-line model/trade mark information on the upper tang, and carbine buttplate with trapdoor holding a three piece cleaning rod.

            Best regards,
            870classic.

I like it, with 20 year old eyes that would be nice, is nice...
I wonder if I can get a ATF Exemption Letter?

Our esteemed colleague SplitHo0f is a rifleman of the first order. Anything he might do to one of his long guns is eminently practical...

Myself? I like the clean lines of the original design... and the '92 short rifle is about the purtiest lever gun around... save for a Turnbull 1873, or a mega-thousand-dollar custom where the wo0d alone is whittled from a very rare burl.

I like to add a ghost ring sights setup to my lever guns. I don't have all 8 levers so equipped, but at over $100 each for the sights system it's going to take me a little more time.

And, a sling is a good thing too on a combat weapon. I'd prefer to keep my lever carbines in a leather scabbard and leave the slings to my scout rifle and shotguns.
                  .

I'm wondering if a legitimate gunsmith would have an issue with this disabling a factory safety feature. Liability issues might be a consideration for him or her.

bbman, I can't answer your question directly, but I can toss out the example of one Steve's Guns who modifies the Rossi 92 to omit the firing pin safety. He also offers a plug to fill the tiny bore leftover in the top of the R92s bolt.
