I bought a rifle, now what scope?

I’m looking for A decent scope and rings at approximately $500. The rifle is a Remington 700 .308 in a Magpul stock. I will use this rifle for target practice only. Steel plates and paper. Probably at 300-700 yards.

What are good suggestions for a scope and rings?

I could up the budget to $1000

$800 to $1000 is the wastland of overpriced cheap scopes.
Bump it up to 1400 and you start getting into actual quality scopes.
First requirement is 34mm tube diameter and first focal plane reticle with mil knobs.
Once you meet those specs, most scopes are good quality.

The Vortex HST and PST 6-24x50 scopes are bad *** for $950. Am I wrong?

I have two vortex PST 6-24 x 50s and they are perfect on my 223 rem and 22-250 rem savages. Older gen models can be had for very reasonable prices.

Great scope for the money. Throw whatever rings you'd like, and you'll be fine.

This is the other one I'd recommend. It has pretty much ALL of the things that Randall said for under 900 bucks, and WAY less then $1400. It's a really SOLID scope for the money.
