I like both colors! but I also like the non-glossy, oiled-wood look that our new friend Revhendo has achieved.

About that Uberti red...

Oh heck yeah! Hand rubbed oil all the way! With a few thousand wooden knife handles and quite a few stocks under my belt, I’m an advocate and a practitioner. Whadya think Butch Searcy does with all his stock cut offs? He trades em to me to use on knives. I might have a lifetime supply of very high end Exhibition/Presentation Grade Turkish walnut!Comment

You and your Exhibition/Preeee-sentation Grade Turkish! Got enough for some 2-pc Ruger plowhandles? Me needs somethin' fer one of my flat-tops.
Stock cut offs are usually just a slice here and there, so I'm guessing you might not have a chunk large enough to whittle into plowhandle grippages... and that warrants a big ol' DAGNABBIT.
Carry on.

Thanks to the grand members of the MLC.
I really like the hand rubbed oil finish. I tend to think it adds more individuality to the firearm. It was a bit of work getting the original stuff off, and I was as nervous as a cougar about to have kittens anytime I was working around edges or the areas where wood meets metal.
I think they came out real well considering my lack of experience and knowledge.
The real inspiration for the project wasn't so much that I didn't like the color (although I really kinda didn't), it was that at a match in February it rained on the last few stages and the furniture just got slick as snot. In all fairness, the 97 was pretty slippery when 107 years of hand, cleaning and gun oils came to the surface, too.
When this whole lockdown, quarantine infringement came on, I had way too much time on my hands and you know what they say about idle hands.

What did you use to strip the factory clear coat? I've tried all sorts with limited success, especially the Uberti made. I did a Pietta and it stripped, the Uberti didn't even soften.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Yeah, that Uberti poly is some serious superhero schtuff.
I put a thick slathering of Citristrip on it and then wrapped it aluminum foil then let it sit for a couple hours. It should lift enough to scrape it off with a plastic putty knife. You'll have to repeat it a couple of times. I also used some 4 ought steel wool for the tougher spots. I was really sketched out about the edges and it shows in some spots where I could've done a better job stripping.Rev.

Just checked my boxes of walnut and I bet ya we can do er. This world get sorted out, you and Rev head on up here and we'll get er done. Never built a pair of grips but I can dang sure bet I got all the tools needed. When you are building these and your base price is 5 figures and rapidly gets into 6 figures as this one was, ya probably don't worry about a little lumber left over now and then. We got pieces big enough:You and your Exhibition/Preeee-sentation Grade Turkish! Got enough for some 2-pc Ruger plowhandles? Me needs somethin' fer one of my flat-tops.

On the other hand never underestimate other sources. A local guy brought me this knife and asked me to re handle it. I used some walnut I had left over from a shelving project we'd done in the living room. Source of this gorgeous black walnut? Home Depot, I kid you not!

Then again, I got elk!

Always wanted to make a set of grips. Rev, here's the wife's Uberti 1873 in .357 mag:

That would pretty much be the only type of stag party I get to go to anymore.
Dang Horsewright, that is impressive. I mean really impressive.
Oh, and I love me them 73s. I was shopping for a Rossi when I bought mine.
The Rossi is still on the list.....Rev.

Well done sir, I don't know how I missed this thread.
Uberti does a nice job with fit and finish. I have a Taylor's and Company Smoke Wagon in .357. It has the best trigger when compared to any of my guns.
When I first looked I thought you have replaced the wood.It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
Happiness is a warm gun.

Thank you Sir.
I thought my Model Ps from Cimarron had good triggers, then I put the Long Hunter spring kits in them.
Just wow is all I can say.Rev.

It's Italian walnut and they're done in mass quantities so the chances of the forearm and buttstock matching are slim. The red stain (historically correct) and poly coating mean they can mass produce the rifles without the cost and downtime of having the furniture labored over by a dedicated craftsman.Rev.

Their base wood for stocks is really plain material.
I see our resident expert on lumber quality has chimed in. Anyone know what wood Rossi uses for their carbine stocks? Because it ain't WALNUT!

No it certainly is not walnut, at least the '92 that I have. It's pretty soft.
I think the OP did an outstanding job on his refinishing project.Comment
