Besides the cartridge length, you need to accommodate the magnum boltface.
It will fit stubby hunting bullets.
It will not fit the really good target bullets seated out long like you would want for a target rifle.
Most custom built short mags are built on intermediate actions so that long skinny bullets can be seated out long.

Factory short mags are usually built on short actions, but they only fit factory length ammo which is primarily hunting ammo.

Oh well. like most of you I have a lot of chamberings already and just wanted something ballistically different from what I have now.

      Well the search continues.

another trend that hasn't been mentioned yet is the 22br

similar to the 224V, but better suited for bolt guns
        - 308 bolt face, more case capacity, longer neck, similar barrel life

IMO, any BR case will make you want to get rid of your 243
        mainly due to:
        1. Accuracy
        2. Barrel life
        3. Ease of loading for a lot of different bullets
        4. Recoil vs. muzzle velocity

No factory barrelled action is going to shoot like a custom barrel gun.
If your feeding the gun single shot you can use any brass with a 308 boltface without any mods.

True, but beasts like .300 PRC and .30 Nosler will kick a lot harder and burn a lot more powder. If you need to smash something the power might be more useful, but if you just want to make a piece of steel go "tink", that 7mm SAUM looks hard to beat.

That video of him making hits at 2200 yards would make me reconsider a big thirty.
