Is it a Howa Mini Action or a normal 308 sized short action? Pretty sure Howa makes 22-250 in both sizes.

Keep in mind it probably wouldn't cost much to have the bolt face opened up if you want to go that route.

Most competitive shooters are using long barrels for 1000 yard work with the 308.
Look for posts by member Ahnother8 as he shoots the 308 better than most at 1000 yards.

Ackley is fine as long as it's just needs fire forming

Will be in oryx chassis/B&C medalist

Something other than 6.5C or 224V.

            What say you?
Since you HAVE a 6mm already, I suggest a 308. In whatever barrel length and twist you want. I'd be looking at what the cool kids in FTR are doing, or palma, and copy them. Depending on whether I wanted a heavy bullet or light bullet.

I do kinda want to move away from 6mm, haven't figured out what yet though.
I do think I could just buy a good off the shelf 308 for less than rebarrel and chassis
For this. Still be stuck with a 22-250, guess I could use it as a loaner.

up to you dude, variety is the spice of life.

But my perspective is you'll struggle to get the same ballistic performance as a (example) 243 AI running 115 DTACs in any other short action cartridge with 308 bolt face.

And any attempt (6.5, 7mm) is only going to cost you more per bullet to shoot and give you less ballistic performance. So why even bother?

308 is at least the benchmark.

                ------------

unless what you are building is going to replace your 6mm and not compliment it. In which case, pick anything. Unless you are using a Calguns popularity contest to pick your cartridge....

22-250 is too long for the mini action.

6.5 PRC would be pretty cool, but I don't think it fits in a short action magazine.

factory ELD-M should fit in a SA AICS magazine without a binder plate

2.955" max OAL if I'm not mistaken

IMO, if it weren't for the Hornady factory ammo and brass availability
the 6.5 SAUM, and 7 SAUM are better options, due to the larger case capacity and longer neck, with the same case length

Yootoob guy WestDesertShooter has turned me into a big fan of the 7mm SAUM. Seems like it would be even more constricted by a short action. He's built his Tikka into a long action for it.

He uses Atlas Development Group brass, which became available several months ago.

I can never make decisions, usually just impulse buy and then figure out what to do with it.

If I rebarreled to 308 the cost of a barrel, Smith and chassis would be almost the same
As just buying a heavy barreled, better stock/chassis, threaded barrel----R700, tikka, savage 12 over the counter.

Will a howa SA accommodate a 7mm or 300 short mag?
