The simple answer is to get both...

Either should be able to work for any hunting in the lower 48.

The 30-06 will have advantage of huge variety of factory ammo from plinker ammo, target/match ammo, and any kind/weight of hunting ammo.

I've made 1-shot kills on deer with both. If I only owned one rifle, it would be a 30-06 for the heavier bullets I use on elk.

For elk, I'd go with the .30-06. One young guy I hunted with in Montana who has shot a ton of elk swears by the 180 gr Hornady Interlock and dislikes partitions as he says they shed too much lead in the meat from the front portion.

That said, a lot of elk have been killed with a .270.

This sounds like you should go with a 30-06 then so you can shoot even heavier bullets.
The 270 generally shoots bullets in about the same weight range as 308.

Just get the 30-06 and be done with it.

The next post will ask about scopes. Get a Leupold 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 with duplex reticle and sight it in 2.75" high at 100 yards. Then hold on the animal and you will have meat in the freezer.

And since you did not ask I suggest you get a Claw sling. I have used many since the 1960's and this one has been the best.

                      .270 WIN.

130 gr. copper for long range, 140 gr. copper or 150 gr. bonded/partition for general use.

With its 65,000 PSI chamber pressure, it is a non-belted magnum that has the recoil of a 150 gr. 30-06, yet the ballistics and terminal performance rivaling that of a 180 gr. 30-06.

                      [EDIT]

                      Just saw OP's above post.

.308 WCF - Worst of both worlds.

I have the 30-06 combo. it's about the cheapest way to get a 700 in your hands, and very handy if you plan to replace the stock because you don't pay more $ for a nicer kit up front.

I should warn you, the scope that came with my rifle was an absolute useless POS. A $45 amazon replacement was vastly better.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

Define better, and as stated, for what purpose? For target, harvesting deer, using as a bridge over a creek, beating zombies heads open?

I prefer a 30-06 but there is nothing wrong with a .270. What do you plan on using it for?
