Either one is a great choice. I've always had a .30-06 and it was my first centerfire rifle. Its edge is with larger game perhaps since it can handle heavier bullets. The .270 is flatter shooting and good for most game in the lower 48 states.
Of all my rifles, my son's favorite (non-varmint) rifle is my .270. He is more of a die-hard hunter than a gun nut.Comment

I've heard that post-2007 Remingtons aren't the best QC wise and tend to rust quickly. Could be an internet rumor but google "Rustingtons" and "Remington rust freedom group"
If you're fine with 30-06, I'd go with 308 instead. You can still have good long range performance up to 800 yards, but you also get relatively cheap plinking ammo as well.Comment

I take care of my rifles always stored lubed up so rust is a non issue , I like building rifles custom wood stocks family made , I plan on keeping them adl's just been thinking which caliber would suit a 50yr old man betterComment

The 270 shoots 100-160 grain bullets and there are very few match bullets for it.
The 30-06 shoots 55 grain sabots sold as Accelerator rounds to the old 250 grain Sierra matchkings no longer made and there are more match bullets for 30 caliber than there are 270 bullets.
270 is a hunting round and the 30-06 is a versatility round.
Luckily for the OP they use everything the same so pick one and buy a spare barrel in the other chamberings for $70 and you have both rounds.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

I always have my guns coated with Barricade or Rusty Duck rust preventatives but still have had 2 guns get rust - a Kimber Classic 1911 and a Remington 870 youth model with the "new" semi-rough dull finish. My buddy's 870 Express with the same finish also rusted despite dehumidifier, etc. Just to be noted as some brands seem more prone to rust than others.Last edited by Calif Hunter; 07-24-2018, 8:33 PM.Comment

Usually hunting up north dear elk etc , I had a 308 felt it wasn't powerful enough to make clean killsComment

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
