Advanced Long-Range Rifle Wind Reading and Skill Building Clinic
Coalinga Rifle Range - 1,000 Yard Range
21 April 2018 - Saturday
Description:
The primary emphasis of this clinic is developing wind reading skills and strategies as well as reinforcing marksmanship fundamentals. Long-range shooting is ALL about reading the wind. It is an art that is never fully mastered and the only way to become proficient at reading the wind is to shoot in it. Other than short introductions and a safety briefing, the clinic will be spent on the range. This clinic is not a "sniper" experience - it is structured to instruct and allow attendees to develop wind-reading skills applicable in all forms of shooting.
The instructors for this clinic have been recruited from some of the best long-range competition shooters in the United States. There will be one coach for every two shooters on the firing line. He/she will help each shooter get set up properly, and then watch them through the firing of each shot. The coaches will talk their two shooters through every shot and how the winds will affect the flight of the bullet. Shooters will rotate between the firing line and pits. At each turn on the firing line, every shooter will work with a new coach. This will provide every participant with a variety of perspectives on long-range shooting. A BBQ lunch is included as part of the clinic fees.
Attendees should expect low to moderate activity levels for this course. All of the shooting will be from 1,000 yard firing line (which is not covered), and from the prone position. Your vehicle will be parked directly behind the firing line and immediately accessible, so bring anything you think you might possibly need. There will be water available while pulling targets in the pits.
If you have attended the clinic in previous years, or considered it - please take note of a few changes this year:
This clinic will be a tremendous opportunity to learn from some of the best marksmen in the United States. We currently have coaches from: U.S. National Long-Range Rifle Team, U.S. Palma Team, U.S. Veterans Team, U.S. F-Class Team, NBRSA National Champions, NBRSA Hall of Fame, U.S. F-Class National Champion, U.S. Palma National Champion, U.S. Service Rifle Rattle-Battle Champions, U.S. Service Rifle National Champions, and winners of multitudes of State Championships throughout the U.S. Many are also Distinguished Riflemen. There have only been 2,380 numbered Distinguished Rifleman Badges awarded in the last 134 years. We expect to have at least 10 of those recipients instructing at this clinic, and many others helping run it.
Gear list (mandatory):
Gear list (recommended):
Appropriate Bullets:
Many cartridge/bullet combinations will reach 1,000 yards - some better than others. The bigger the cartridge, the more leeway there is in bullet selection for long-range shooting. Sierra, Hornady, Berger, JLK, and Nosler all make suitable bullets. In general, the heavier the bullet in any given bore size, the better and the higher the BC, the better. Following is a list of what should work well. Ask if you have questions about any specific combinations.
Registration
There are 50 spots available for the clinic. The sign-up process is much simpler this year:
Please note: the clinic will be held rain or shine!
Lodging:
Prior to the clinic, participants will receive an email with a detailed schedule of the day, and directions to the range. Some initial directions are available on the Eventbrite page.
