You don't own or even have a gun you can borrow that will outshoot a 700 Remington I own. Not even a 6 PPC. I think I hear your mother calling. Dinner must be ready?Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

5R bartleins seem to be fine. Are you shooting F-Class?Comment

Wow. Some of you guys are certainly in the game. A bit over my head, but, that is fine. Learned what I wanted to about the 6.5 family. Some very informative answers here, save for one. Thanks fellas.Comment

Ignore the Troll. When his mother gets home and finds out he has been on her PC again she will give him a time out.
There are several specialties listed here that have slight variations in what is needed.
The Benchrest crowd doesn't care about barrel life barrel heat or anything else except pure accuracy because they are shooting 5 shot groups and will change barrels between relays.
The F-Class crowd needs a round that will group twenty shot strings three in a row without heating up a barrel to the point it will start throwing shots. A ballistic advantage is huge because of the amount of time required to put 60 rounds downrange but if you use too large of a case recoil and heat become a problem.
I don't shoot tactical matches but Diver and Randall have explained what is required for that sport.
There is a length to diameter ratio that produces extreme accuracy. It was patented by Rick Jameson when he developed the 300 WSM cartridge and now that all the legal battles are over it turned out to be a highly accurate chamberings.
Byron Smalley from Morton Thiokol and Mic McPherson developed a series of cartridges they patented under the SMc moniker that had rounded shoulders rather than flat shoulders and they also had a very specific length to diameter ratio. In the 6.5 caliber they designed two cartridges with that length to diameter ratio one based on a standard Magnum cartridge and the other based on a 338 Lapua cartridge. You could push a 142 Sierra class bullet at amazing velocities without burning up the throat was the claim. The case looked like a rocket nozzle.
The picture shows the round shoulder on my chamber reamer if you can see it.
The picture will not upload so I will try again after work.Last edited by LynnJr; 01-27-2018, 5:38 AM.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Anything over 0.014 thick gets hard to maintain a consistent neck tension. Cases like the WSSM are very thick and you never see them in the winners circle until the necks are thinned way down.
On my 600/1000 yard guns I use a 0.268 neck on my 6mm cartridges and it seems to work but I haven't tried the 0.262 necks we see on the PPC cases.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

The depth of knowledge is wide and deep for the 6PPC in serious BR shooting, and this is one of the reasons the cartridge is the gold standard for that game. Just in case some don't know, guys have been shooting for ultimate level accuracy for far longer than 6PPC has been around, so it can be reasonably deduced that other cartridges were once considered to be the most suitable for the undertaking, and once upon a time even .222 was considered a top performer. So whether you think it is monkey see monkey do, or not, give the game a shot and see what YOU can do with any cartridge you choose, and see where you can place in the field of competition. That ought to reduce the amount of pontification down considerably as to whether 6PPC is as good as it is.Last edited by bridgeport; 01-27-2018, 6:50 AM.Comment

So long as components (both for rifle and ammunition) keep getting better, this is always a chance something could be better. It is just going to take someone doing it (and winning) to get others to change. So whether you think it is monkey see monkey do, or not, give the game a shot and see what YOU can do with any cartridge you choose, and see where you can place in the field of competition. That ought to reduce the amount of pontification down considerably as to whether 6PPC is as good as it is.
The whole monkey see monkey do attitude is just merely imitation of the guys winning (the sincerest form of flattery).Comment

You have to remember that 100,000s of groups have been shot in benchrest competition with the 222, 6X47 (6mmX222 REM MAG), and the 6PPC. But single groups don't win a match, it's the aggregate of multiple groups that win matches. The 222 REM was obsolete after the first match was won by the 6PPC. It's no surprise that a single group can hold a single group record after the cartridge is retired, statistics tell us that will happen eventually but the consistently small groups have been owned mostly by the 6PPC since it's first match.
Not sure what the H you are talking about since you failed to complete your thought. I've been retired longer than you have been a poster here, and probably been hand loading longer than you have been alive, I might have learned some things along the way.Last edited by russ69; 01-27-2018, 2:09 PM.sigpicComment

Did I call you out like you did me? NO so then you must be feeling guilty? That's on you you created it live with it. Been around since 62 and older or not holds NO merit on the case at hand. Don't like my comments don't read them it's just simple or use your ignore Feature that's why it's there. You just made mine you given me crap a few other times for no reason other than sheer argument Good eve to you.Last edited by Jimmy's; 01-27-2018, 4:09 PM.Comment
