In my 300 WSM I use 187 grain BIB flatbase bullets and those bullets have a very pronounced pressure ring created during the manufacturing process.
Sierras and Bergers have the same ring but it gets roll removed at a later stage.
The flatbase bullets with a pronounced pressure ring need 0.004 - 0.005 of necking down to allow enough brass springback to hold the bullet into alignment.
On regular boattail bullets like most here use 0.003 is sufficient to hold the bullet into alignment while not being so loose that it allows for bullet setback during recoil.

For those that are neck turning there brass and going with very little clearance or even fitted necks your neck turning needs to be done correctly.
As Bryan pointed out any inconsistency will get you a flier. Four easy to chamber rounds will go through the same hole while a snug fitting round will throw that bullet.
It is often times said this sport is a reloading duel.

[QUOTE=SMarquez;21199045]The shorter action can be lighter and stiffer. /QUOTE]

No. Just no. No No No. Show me. Not in any meaningful or demonstrable way. Just no. This type of "^%G%#$" just keeps getting repeated until. ... It's squashed. I squealed the same thing to some bench rest shooters and one of them said THEY can tell side by side in a dark room because of the bolt pull distance. You and I can't. You could tell them apart with a scale, but not with any other means.

OP, if you really read credible manuals it would answer all your questions. Sierra and Speer all give lengthy details on each cartridges purpose and history. Left out are the 6.5x284 and 6.5-06 which take case capacity and range up another level.

Flouncer, Yes, I read thru some very credible manuals. I know how to do that. I pretty much wanted to find out from people who actually know them better than me, what all the hype is regarding these rounds.
If you can't tell the difference between a long or short bolt throw, you haven't shot bolt rifles very long or often. Try it on a Mauser '98, then a Mod 700 SA.

Maybe he shoots an intermediate action a lot.
