I won't be getting anything like that. I'm leaning more towards .243/6 CM/6.5 CM because I have no idea where I would go to shoot 2000 yards. There's an 800 yard range nearby but that's about it. If I look around enough I might be able to find a thousand yards or so, but there is not the BLM land around here that there used to be, and what there is, is covered with thick vegetation. It's desert, but the trees and bushes are 3 to 8 feet high.

The second factor is cost. .338 LM components are considerably more expensive than .243 components. That's not even considering the cost of the rifle and scope. Truth be told if I were to try 1 mile+ stuff I'd be inclined to go .50 BMG. I have a ton of fun .50 ammo from the days when I hung out with machine gun guys.

The advantage of some of the newer chamberings is when offered in factory form they have the correct twist in the barrel to handle the higher BC bullets.
The 243 in a 7-8.5 twist rate barrel is an amazing cartridge but getting that twist rate usually means a custom barrel.
On the costs Lapua brass for a 338 is twice that of a 243.
Powder for the 338 Lapua is double that of the 243.
      Primers are about the same.
Bullets for the 338 Lapua are around three times the cost of 6mm bullets.
You can definitely get to 2000 yards with the 6/6.5 mm cartridges but spotting the splashes and dealing with the conditions is what will be the biggest challenge.
On my earlier post I didn't finish it correctly.
If you get a fast big bore to shoot small you will rule the roost. I have two 338 SnipeTac's built a third action sitting here a spare 375 barrel and a pair of 50 BMG's.
If Focus shows up in less than two weeks and creams us badly which is highly likely that 375 barrel will likely get installed very quickly.
If he shoots mediocre I am leaning towards a 50BMG Ackley Improved.
The reason for that is the large selection of quality bullets.
We have a shooter with a Ballisticians dream rifle but he hasn't shot it yet. It's a modified 375/50BMG that on paper should knock the eye out of a gnat at 5000 yards.
I have the brass the action and the barrel waiting in case it performs on the gong like it does on paper.

Yes, it's a crying shame almost all the .243's you can buy in a gun shop have a slow twist. Gun manufacturers have no incentive to put fast twists on, unfortunately.

        .375-50? Oy vey.

I know this thread isnt for this purpose but is there anywhere else in norcal for a newb to practice at 500+ yards. I promise i wont take anyone else except my dad and I will clean up my brass and no one will ever know im there. I live in sacramento. Definitely nowhere near ready for 2000 yards but id like to grow into it.

Feel free to PM me if you know of a spot id be forever grateful.

If you don't mind shooting off of a bench you can shoot with the 600/1000 yard Benchrest guys at Sacramento on there practice day.
I think Craig is leaving soon so the place is improving but look for Bob Dorton as he is without a doubt the best person there and is extremely helpful.

                Hey Shooters
As most everyone knows everything up here is or was on fire.
One of our shooters lost his house and right now we are not sure if/when we can get up to our shooting location.
The match will be a Yes/No decision on Wednesday after I get home from work so please check this thread on Wednesday.

That's what I was going to ask.

Hope everything will work out for our shooter.

It was a 7wsm that Stomper was shooting that day. Too bad he moved to Oregon. Lynn, I plan on attending a few matches this year as last time I took out the 338imp it was bugholing with non fire formed brass. As long as I can get Mamba to run me up some reloads I'll be attending after hunting season. Im off to X1 today chasing mule deer and archery bear till the end of the month.

On another note, the fire devastation is horrendous. I live 2.5 hrs drive north of the fires and for the first time in my life, the smoke smells like burning plastic. Normally it just smells like a burning forrest. So sad for all whom have been affected.

Hoffer is correct in that we will wait until Thursday to decide what to do.
Right now I just got off of my roof watering it down in case a ember lands I don't burn down.

                            Skkeeter
It burned 100,000 acres and 3500 homes so far and I haven't seen any air tankers at all. Right now it's still a mile and a half away and headed south.
Everything here smells like smoke and people are driving around with filters on there faces.

My former forum name was Standish for reference.

I haven’t got into the ELR with you guys yet, but I do enjoy 600-1200 yards. One day I’ll get out with you all.

In the mean time, I won’t be making the match. I’m headed out to bring in relief supplies for the evacuees and helping to cook at a shelter site in Petaluma. The US has taken a beating these last few months.
