URSA October 15th 2000+ Yard Match

    Shooters
Anyone wanting to really stretch out your shooting is invited to watch or shoot the October match.
Get to the match as early as possible and set up your gear. We have been down a couple months due to deer seasons in the area so grass overgrowth may need to be cleared on the shooting lanes.
No rain is forecast so let's keep our fingers crossed.
Bring 60-75 rounds minimum as we always run out of ammo before the shooters want to go home.
It will be very cold early on so bring a jacket/coat that you can shed once it heats up.
I hope these coordinates help those in finding us?

No pit duty and no fees of any kind just show up fill out a waiver and shoot.
This is also a qualifying match for the upcoming SoCal 3K Challenge Match which requires 5 hits out of 10 shots so don't stop shooting after 4 hits!!!!!!!!!
After 4 hits you are automatically qualified to move back to 2586 yards but 5 hits gets you an achievement point and qualifies you for the 3K Match. Keep that in mind!!!!
We have a couple shooters in need of one or two achievement points to move up the ladder so we will hold two matches weather permitting.
For those thinking this would be fun but 2000 yards is intimidating rest assured this is a very casually run match and we will try hard to get you a hit.
We shoot above UpperLake California 3 miles west of the Highglade Lookout on deer valley road.

Lynn is referring to the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge to be held in SoCal - it is not a SoCal event, just being held there. See http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1381322

FYI, the logistics at the current NorCal venue (having to move back and forth between firing points for each distance change) makes SoCal the more "logical" location - no firing point change, just change your POA to the next target down range. At some point we may be able to gain access to another NorCal venue that will make things easier, or Lynn may just make it work with the current setup. Lynn's very good at making things work!

Lynn also did a great job of getting the don't-stop-at-4-hits point across. Thanks. Hoping to be mailing out a bunch of green t-shirts this "season".

What kinds of calibers are common? Monster .40's and .375's? 50's?

The reason I ask is ballistics charts of "normal" calibers have them going subsonic at 1400 yards or maybe a little further. Yet there are youtubes of 2000, 2500, 3000 yard hits or more. Are they able to hit crap even after going subsonic??

        338LM would be standard fare

6mm and up works on a low wind day which is rare.

Subsonic is pretty standard at target distances and works with good bullets like Bergers

With a 338 SnipeTac you can stay supersonic to 3100 yards.
That said alot of the monolithic solid bullets don't group well enough to be competitive as dispersion isn't linear.
High BC number bullets at top velocities win on paper but at actual matches you need accuracy as well.

Okay, so basically big boomers. I wonder how the hell these youtubers are making 2000 yard hits with 6.5's. I guess with the big steel targets, subsonic is still "good enough" to make hits.

You have to make your videos on a calm day so you look good.
Also make sure you edit the video to show the one hit out of 50 you sent down range.

My father shot a 6 Dasher at 2000 yards which is basically a 103 grain bullet at 3050 FPS using 33 grains of powder.
You need 121 moa to make the shot and once you get gong hits it was a good combination.
The big hurdle was getting the first hit. We knew the elevation within a few moa but we couldn't pick up the bullets splash so making corrections killed us.
With a 50BMG those 800 grain bullets throw the dirt/mud/grass/shrubs six feet into the air so dialing in even if your not close is relatively easy.
In the desert it is easier to spot your misses because the sand blows good with just about any size bullet.
The accuracy comes into play when your splashes are all around the gong but your not getting hits.
As Hoffer said you can hold center mass and shoot a hundred rounds and get a hit or two but that doesn't get you qualified.
I was after the high velocity super flat shooting big boomer craze until Hoffer showed up with a 300 grain bullet at 2570 FPS and made us all look silly.
That said that combination is good to about 2500 yards.
There are videos were someone shoots 180 rounds and gets one hit at a target the size of a boxcar at 4600+ yards.
We are more geared towards getting 3-5 hits out of 10 shots at a given point in time with lots of witnesses watching.
The better the background is for spotting your splashes the quicker you will get to the gong.
If your not busy on the 15th checkout the NorCal or SoCal match.

Bullet splash is a big deal for sighting in. Thats where the bigger stuff has an extra advantage.
You will not be able to see a 6-6.5 MM miss in slightly damp dirt. Can barely see a 338 in damp dirt.

Don't forget the 30 cal conspiracy....

In the early days of NorCal URSA; a couple guys with 300 Win mags were regular winners. They demonstrated that skill and preparation could overcome the big-boomer advantages. Kinda it's the Indian not the arrow thing.

I won my first URSA match. Just cause; I lucked into a sweet shooting NOS 338LM Surgeon Remedy left over from a contract bid. Very early serial number action. I did OK with that thing. But, last year was a disaster. I ran a 338 SnipeTac and lost way more than I won. A 338 Flatline moving around 3500 FPS looked good on paper. I just wasn't able to tame that beast. I'm stepping down to a 3100 FPS round for this year. We'll see how that works out.

                    Cheers,

The Thirty Caliber Conspiracy led by Shaun and Dan both won matches and we had a guy shooting a 7mm Remington Magnum run a bunch of consecutive hits as well.
Skeeter built Trevor a 7SAUM I think and he hammered our gong 7/10 times

Thanks, but NorCal and SoCal are a long ways for me to drive. Also, you guys are doing bullseye, right? I don't have any interest in that, but I asked my question here because I figured you guys would know the answer. If I get into the long range game it would be with an eye towards PRS and your calibers are not allowed.

WRT youtubes, I agree that most have cherry-picked hits. But some are continuous recording, like by mikeandsamafterwork, and they seem to get hit after hit at ridiculous ranges, with comparatively small calibers. My buddy's experience with bullets going subsonic was that they wobble pretty badly, and he had lots of keyhole hits. He was using comparatively low BC bullets, like military or 168 gr GMM at best. Do high BC bullets fly truer even after going subsonic?

                            Sigstroker
At our matches it is each shooter shooting in the position of there choosing using the gun of there choosing against the gong. In other words anything goes as long as it's legal to own and SAFE to shoot.
We don't hang from helicopters or shoot out of garbage cans on one leg but if you wanted to do that we would let you as long as it was safe/legal.
On the YouTube videos it is all about conditions and the surrounding terrain. In NorCal the gong sits in a clearing that is around 7-9 moa tall and 15-18 moa wide but the ground is hard and often in a shadow.
In SoCal the gong can be seen for half a mile in any/all directions and it is extremely sandy and 95+% of all shots get seen.
NorCal has very little mirage and gets a lot of hits on the gong at each match.
SoCal has lots of mirage and much fewer hits on average on the gong.
Like I said earlier the smaller very accurate cartridges have a huge ballistic burden but there inherent accuracy helps them with everything except spotting misses.

The high BC bullets allow a shooter to reach these very long distances without as much elevation cranked into the scope.
A 338 SnipeTac shooting a 256 grain Warner Flatline bullet at 3500 fps needs around 41 MOA at 2000 yards which is very easily done with most scopes an without a canted rail.
The 308 Winchester using a 175 grain Tipped MatchKing bullet will need 114 moa at the same distance.
The 338 SnipeTac will put all of its shots near or on the gong while the 308 in calm conditions will ring it like the dinner bell on the Ponderosa and in bad conditions you will never see a hit.
The high BC fast moving bullets may not hit the gong but they are less affected by mother nature and will hangout near the gong.

As Focus said high velocity big bores look good on paper, but you have to tame the beast mechanically to make it work. The longest shot obtained in competition is with a standard 375 Cheytac at King of 2 Miles this year.
I e-mailed Mitch Fitzpatrick at Lethal Precision to see about the 375 Lethal Magnum which won last years match and it has been basically discontinued. Looks great on paper ... did not make the cut this year. Bigger is theoretically better if you can hold on to the kick of the explosion going on 8" from your face. It is basically science and a physical operator has to operate it to within thousands of an inch to be accurate ate ULR disances.
