I'm in the same boat as you OP, been looking for a scope to mount on my Howa mini action 223. The one I plan on getting is the Athlon Optics Argos BTR 8-34x56, the reviews are good and with the higher magnification I'll be able to see my shots on paper.
I think it will serve my purpose for punching holes in paper and not needing a spotting scope.
