Its the Sig Sauer Whiskey3 Hunting Riflescope 3-9x50mm

i'm probably going to get one myself

What are you shooting at out to 300 yards paper or steel or animals ?

If shooting at paper you will want athe 4 -16 at least so you can see the small 223 holes out that far. If just plinking steel or such then 10x or less. That's just me. I have trouble seeing holes on paper anything less then 16x out to 300.

I would go the vortex hs route 4-16x

I am shooting paper targets, and I do not own a spotters scope to check for holes - so I do need to see the holes. I do like to keep everything ready for real world use in case I need to shoot a rabbit (backyard is crawling with em) in an emergency sitch. I do not trick out guns for competition or technical shooting. (not that anyone is tricking out a 783 remmy). I do like things durable and able to work in harsh conditions.

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions.

With .223 I'd like to have a larger magnification for target shooting. The low recoil of the cartridge gives you the advantage of being able to spot your impact at a higher magnification. And, I'd definitely avoid any made in China optics.

A fixed 10x is a lot of scope for 100-300yd. Unless you are shooting slow moving ants.

I would by Leupold. It it a good quality glass with good customer service company. Leupolds hold their value and if you get different rifle you can move scope to it.

Of the choices listed in the OP the VX-3i is the one I'd choose.

I have a very low opinion of Vortex Crossfires.

It's the lightest target scope I own... but if you compare it to something like a 3-9x40 hunting scope with a 1" tube, it could be considered "too heavy".

Most of my target scopes are of the 5-20x50 or 6-24x50 flavor so I think the SWFA is a light weight option.

I guess i see it as a multiple purpose scope. It works quite well me with target shooting to see those holes on papers, and with 5-600 yards possibility if he wants later.

I would look at a Leupold VX-II. Good scope at a fair price, and lifetime warranty.

Since you're a realist about your skills, I would say go with the Nikon (or a Nikon 4-12x40) and put your savings towards ammo. I have a Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 (about $200) on a Mossberg .223 and it gets me to 400 yards comfortably.

The prices are pretty wide... help me choose. I would like to shoot out to 300 yards, but mostly around 100 - 150 yards.

                            $355 - Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40mm Matte Duplex (most-ish I would spend)

                            $259 - Primary Arms 4-14X44 FFP Scope w/ ACSS Orion Reticle .308/.223

                            $203 - Weaver 849780 Optics Kaspa Tactical Scope, 1.5-6 x 32mm, Dark Earth

                            $158 - Nikon P-223 3-9x40 Mate BDC 600

Feel free to add your choice, if not listed above, $500 is my max.
