Easier to use 270 brass and neck it down as it's SO much closer to 6.5 caliber than 30-06 brass.

Depends on the weight of your stock.
If you do NOT have a REALLY heavy stock to help balance a REALLY heavy barrel, stay away from bull barrels.
I have seen rifles built that would tip over forward when the gun is placed on the bench on a bipod at the front sling swivel.
Guns setup that way are no good for any type of shooting.

I just plan on doing the usual varmint barrel in a b&c type stock.

But i was looking at the options and was curious

What is the diameter at the muzzle?

.825 if I recall correctly. It's a Remington varmint profile.

Just a heads up a 27" varmint barrel is going to make your rifle closer to 12-14lbs depending on your scope. A bull barrel will be even heavier. Not great for hunting.

A Tikka T3 would be a better choice for hunting. They are very accurate and very light.

Any suggestions for reasonable but nice bases and rings?

What size rings do you need? My son has a pair of TPS rings that were to short for his rifle.

I like TPS and Talley myself but there are lots of good choices for bases and rings. Just make sure to not use steel rings on an aluminum base.

I've read that many times. Before I knew better I'd mounted a bunch of steel Warne rings on aluminum picatinny's and never had an issue though.

As long as you don't over torque steel rings on aluminum your fine.
