There's no "test case". In fact, there are legal ways to assemble and use a 50BMG upper in CA on an unregistered lower. So, it's no different than owning regular AR mag released lower with a stock attached and owning an upper with a FH. As long as the two don't get mated up, it's 110% legal.

Chambered a 50 BMG round. It chambers.

Looking at the S3 page on the Zel site, and then your second photo, looks to me that you were measuring the opening of the brake. There is a good chance that they installed the .50 cal brake. That tells you nothing about the chamber.

Quite unclear how you would have cleared DROS unless the barrel was marked .416 Barrett. Please look for other markings on the barrel.
The marking is not on the brake. It's on the barrel itself. And as stated in earlier responses, no dros needed as this is an upper receiver, not a complete rifle. I did have a .50 BMG upper for an AR lower. It was on an AW lower rec.

Your in a very tempting situation but I would put that big toy in Monday mornings mail and get that 416 on its way.
There is probably a guy from another state on another forum asking why his 50 BMG ammo won't chamber in his new 50BMG upper and his is marked 416 Barrett.

Lol that would be hilarious. Tempting yes but not really. Our unit just got in some new M2a1's. Nothing says MERICA like a full auto .50! This upper is ready for shipment.

I'd send it back since, it's not what you ordered. Besides, a 24" 50 isn't a long range barrel anyway. I don't know if 24" is enough length for a long range .416B barrel but, since it is a smaller capacity cartridge, it might be alright.

^ That's good advice. If you are going to spend the $$$, get a 30" or 32" Criterion or Lilja barrel. You don't want anything short, light, or fluted on a BMG-based upper. ~40 lbs is a good finished weight for a BMG-based rifle that you are going to fire 40-60 times in one sitting. I also highly recommend the Zel Magpul/Pachmayr pad - it helps quite a bit.

I can shoot my <35lb (including optics, bipod, rails, etc.) 50BMGs all day long (50-100 rounds or more) without any problems. Hell, my stepson was doing that at 14 years old. A good MB does wonders.

From my own experience shooting a ~35 lb rifle, 50 rounds gives me a pretty good case of "BMG brain" from the overpressure. It feels like a mild case of sinus squeeze from scuba diving. My shoulder is generally fine.

What rifle? What brake? I see many people at matches shooting 34-35lb ALS uppers and AR50s and putting 50-75 rounds downrange per day without issues. Of course, it's not for everyone.

It's a Ferrett 50 in DTC with the standard Ferrett 29" barrel and a normal (not the clamshell-style) brake.

considering the price for .416 Barrett ammo I am not going to be shooting this 40-60 times in one sitting. Just one of those "check this out" type of rifles. I will probably end up selling it at the end of this year anyway. I'm currently building a Remy 700 308 win on a tac-21 chassis to see how far I can push its limits. After that I will prob go with 338LM.

Bingo. Or, even a custom benchrest rail gun would be legal.
