STEYR SCOUT RIFLE

Is the Steyr Scout available in CA in Remington 223 or NATO 5.56?
All I could find them in was .308.
Would it be legal to purchase one in 223 from out of state (and imported via an FFL of course)..?

There are no restrictions that would keep the 223 model from being sold in California.
It's probably more about market demand than anything else.

I am not sure Steyr is currently making the 223 version, though it is still cataloged based on their web page in the US.

I have not seen any for sale new for a while now. used are probably still out there, but given the small number may actually cost more used vs new.

among people who understand the scout rifle concept, 223 isn't that popular a caliber for the rifles. particularly if they actually use it in the field vs just a rang toy.

The idea was sound when Cooper and others came up with it.



I guess it was fazed out of popularity by all those 3 mile kill shots done by SEAL operators in Iraq, and the AR 300BO.

If you like bolt guns, and want something fast and light, the Scout concept is good.

This is probably why you can't find any.

An AR-15 could be set up as a Scout rifle (in 223). It has the advantage of being a semi-auto.

Three companies sell scout rifles today: Savage, Steyr and Ruger. Ruger sells a ton of GSRs, with all sorts of options: ( including 5.56 )

really? seems stronger than ever. and if you are looking for a production rifle that is as close as you can get to the concept when buying a production rifle, the Steyr has never been more affordable. people spend 1400 or more on basic "budget" rifles for hunting and getting into longer range shooting so spending 1400 or so on a scout is NOT expensive IF that is what you want.

ruger isn't a bad second place choice.

ARs do not make scout rifles and given the goals, semi auto fire isn't all that important. that should NOT be confused with semi autos can't be scouts, there just isn't any semi auto design that can meet the goals currently.

Having said that, the AR can be made into a light weight, quick handling arm that is pretty darn good for a good number of things, but it is not as versatile as the goals of the scout rifle.

The scout rifle concept is timeless, and the specifics for meeting the concept are not locked in stone, but you do need to understand the original goals and why choices were made in order to be sure any updates keep with the concept.

I seem to recall it was a .223 when I played.

Of course, the AWM was called the AWP as well; and the M4 with a suppressor was a headshot machine, second only the TMP! I stopped playing when it came out of beta...

It certainly seems to have been a .308 when I played (from what I can tell), but I could have sworn it was a .223 as I remember thinking "why the hell would they have a sniper rifle in .223?". Heh, who knows, this was nearly 17 years ago!

Steyr Scout in 308 has been on my wish list for a long time... I wish it was a little more affordable but its one of my favorite rifles. Its such a pleasure to use.

I don't think I would ever buy one in 223.

Its funny someone mentioned CS, that's how I learned about it in the first place.

I have the Steyr Scout in both 308 and 223. The 308 is more practical. But the 223 is fun to shoot and a lot cheaper per round.
