Is it worth getting one of those PTG bolts for a virgin 700 receiver? Or is truing much more beneficial?

If you get a virgin 700 receiver, order it without a bolt.
Then you can get a PTG bolt for it that fits it MUCH nicer than a stock remington bolt, without truing.

        Truing is not really required.
Most people do it because it makes them feel better.
It's also not a whole lot of extra money in the grand scheme if you are ALREADY ordering a new bolt, barrel and lug and paying somone to put the gun together...
Anything that you can do to give yourself more confidence in the gun will benefit you.

          Randall
I am curious as to how it shoots.

          Varg
If your factory bolt has alot of slop it helps to tighten it up. De-cock your rifle by holding the trigger and lowering the bolt handle on an empty chamber.
Now grab the bolt shroud and see how much it wiggles. On a custom action or a trued action it won't wiggle around much.
If you look at the top lever of your trigger and the bottom of the cocking piece on your bolt they are angled. When you are using a 22-28 pound firing pin spring the bolt vets pushed upwards.
When the trigger gets pulled the top lever drops allowing the cocking piece to move forward but it also lets the bolt drop down.
When this happens you can not have full contact of the bolt lugs on the lug abutments which sets up unwanted harmonics in the barrel.
On a hunting rifle no big deal. On a competition rifle where the competition is out to beat you leave no stone unturned.

            I am too.
I don't have any experience shooting carbon wrapped barrels.

            Here is the barrelled action:

The stock's barrel channel still needs to be opened up before the barrelled action will drop into the stock.

Those PTG bolts need to be fitted to the action as well?

I got the action with the bolt and X-Mark Trigger.

                Yes.
The leading edges of the lugs need to be rolled over.
All the rest of the sharp edges need to be knocked off as well.
The notch where the cocking piece rests usually can use some tuning to make the bolt closing nicer.

Before you even order a bolt, you need to measure the receiver to see wht size the bore is.
                It's usually around 0.701" to 0.703".
The stock bolt is almost always 0.695"
                That's 0.006" to 0.008" clearance on a typical 700.
You can tighten up the clearance to 0.003" if you intend to ceracoat, 0.004" if you intend to duracoat or 0.002" if you intend to blue or parkerize the bolt.

Also, the under-sized factory bolt that comes with the action has a ridiculously small handle. It provides for less leverage, and this exacerbates the sticky bolt problems that come when the bolt doesn't fit well. Thus, you end up needing a new bolt, or at least get a bigger knob installed.

Most likely you will be disappointed if your expecting the same results that a Bartlein will produce. They are capable of genuine sub .25" barrels, but they are rare and loads can be finicky. If your expecting consistent 1/2-3/4" you should be happy as a clam. Until they become more consistent, I won't be recommending them to future customers unless they want a 6lb rifle.

I had the barrelled action in the milling machine vise when I was tightening the brake on the barrel into perfect alignment.
The barrel flexed like a sporter barrel so I suspect it will move around with temperature change just like a sporter barrel...

I've also noticed they are prone to flex more while being chucked up in the lathe, hence I grab them as lightly as possible. Not quite as rigid as they claim.... I was chatting with a engineer buddy about this exact thing the other day and he proposed winding the carbon fibers in a continuos (single strand) helical pattern for more strength. Either way, that's all above my security clearance as I just turn wheels on a machine

I was worried about touching down on the carbon with my outboard spider so I made a ring and pressed it on the barrel by hand:

I got my barreled action back, the gun smith said that I should find another action because of how good the tolerances are on this action.
