      Thanks.

Don't really know how effective the hider is. Never compared it with anything.

The trigger is pretty nice for a factory trigger. Smooth, about the right pull, and breaks nicely and predictably.

Antis plan/strategy is coming along nicely.
Not really, I find a ban on semi auto rifles to be unlikely, but as I explained it got me thinking about the effectiveness of the manually operated platform of rifles in the right hands, and if I could achieve that level of speed and precision myself with enough practice.

          That'll be my California-SHTF-truck-gun

AR's are great and I like mine, but I don't feel undergunned with a bolt action.

Now I need to figure out the optic...optimal would be something fast enough for CQB, with minimal parallax, but with milradian hash marks or holdovers. Hoping to find that in one optic, but guessing I'll have to pair a mini red dot with glass.
Check out the Leupold website and build it. Their custom shop is truly awesome and there are more options available on every scope than you might realize.

I would personally go with something like 1-4x with a fine duplex reticle and exposed ballistic turrets with milrad adjustments with markings for NATO ammo at an average altitude for your part of CA. Some might want higher magnification for longer range, but I find the superior optical clarity, for the cost, on lower power scopes make up lack of magnification and I sometimes have trouble with scope wink and eye relief on the more powerful optics.

I said almost the exact same thing in my original post. You are the one who made your own assumptions because you are obsessed with the politics of guns.

I'm sure someone must have mentioned the idea of a pump rifle instead. Right?

Yes, but I commented that I felt it would be cheating the challenge for this project for me. If I were to limit the challenge specifically to manual operation vs. semi-auto I would absolutely use a pump action or straight pull conversion from something like an AR-15.

The historical transition in standard issue infantry military rifles from bolt action to semi-auto is more of what I'm exploring down this rabbit hole.

Well, get it in a Boyds walnut stock with no extras.
Just milspec-style from a century ago.

And throw on a sling of your choosing, then you're done.

Internal bling mag, no losing mags on the "battlefield".
Already comes with iron sights, so don't even bother putting glass on.
Has a nice round, durable knob for "tactical" use.
Also threaded for that flash hider. You know....more tactical.
But seriously, it's friggin' cool. Hasty sling, standing, and banging steel with my match loads is serious fun.

I like everything about the Hog Hunter but the limited capacity and lack of magazines. The price is certainly right too.

At least two of you seem to think this is an advantage and have concerns about lost magazines. I'm curious as to this thought process as I never had trouble keeping track of my magazines in any training scenarios or combat I've experienced. Is this really a big problem for some people?

Two is one, one is none.
For the most part a bolt action rifle with a detachable magazine will only come with one magazine. Magazines for them are typically expensive. If that magazine is lost or damaged feeding that rifle is extremely difficult.

Stripper clips are lighter, cheaper, and quick enough for most people.

If only the savage had a stripper clip guide.

                            edit to add:
As a soldier or Marine you have an entire supply chain behind you. If you lose a mag or break a spring you can usually get another one. As a civilian looking for a 'bolt action battle rifle' you probably won't have that supply chain behind you if you have to use your bolt action rifle for battle.

                              Converted Lee-Enfield?

Some companies will convert the Enfield into 7.62x39 or .45 ACP - google for more info.

16" barrel Ruger Gunsite Scout .308 - 3, 5 or 10-rd detachable box mags. Factory ghost ring irons make center hits on 100 yd 12" steel easy as pie, offhand. Don't sweat the [Edit: 50 fps] loss from an 18 incher. This rifle is both light(er) and surprisingly soft-shooting for .308. 100% reliable.

18" barrel CZ 527 Carbine 7.62 X 39 - 5-rd DBM. Factory irons are decent enough but this carbine can be conventionally-scoped.
