Does anybody know what scope is included with those Rem combos? In the ad it shows an R on the scope, as if it was Redfield but in person it didnt have any markings on it. Kinda looked like a tasco to me but not sure.

The sticker price out the door was $514 but they give you a $50 mail in rebate that you get before the 10 day waiting period is up. So total out of pocket is $464 including taxes and registration fees. They charge $15 or $20 more if you don't have a hunting license.
The scope is included as is the bases and rings. I don't know who made the scope but it has a duplex reticle going from thick crosshairs to a thinner crosshairs. I doubt its a Redfield and more than likely a Chinese cheapy but will give it a try.

If it shoots like a tomato stake i will have Randall put a real barrel on it.
For the price you are turn key ready to go and it has a 9 twist 26 inch barrel. If you just want to shoot gongs to 600 yards it should have no problem with that.
Plus you get a action you can upgrade IF you want something different down the road.
In Randall's picture he has pinned the recoil lug. For those that don't know that means you can swap out the barrel without worrying were the recoil lug is facing. If you don't pin the lug you need a alignment tool to hold it into place so it doesn't dig into your bedding. The alignment tool costs $15 - $45 and keeps the lug from twisting as you tighten down the barrel.
You never seem to see it on Calguns but in the varmint fields you see guys swapping out barrels when they get hot/fouled as it is faster than cleaning them.
You can also buy a second or third bolt and have 20+ guns built around one action.

I don't understand your aversion to a Remington 700. Many high power shooters use that action as the foundation of their target rifles. Besides there are a lot of after market parts that can be put on it to make it more accurate.

With Savage you don't have to worry about the barrel shooting like a tomato stake, They come with real barrels

Working the action on a Savage is like running in sand though

Thanks for all the advice guys(and gals)! Lots of good info to get me going on the right track.

I do plan to reload, but I said "common calibers" as I don't want to pay a fortune for brass or make my own. Also there is always that one guy who swears by some wacky cartridge like the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer.

My slight aversion to the Rem 700 is that everywhere i go the consensus is that you have to another $300 for an action job and better trigger to get it to shoot consistently.

              Thanks,
              Yogg

p.s. To the one that asked, yes I do shoot at SLOSA

Yeah the barrels have to be good to make up for the rube Goldberg bolt.

If you are comparing them to similarly priced factory guns, they shoot just as good as any other random sampling of similarly priced factory guns.
If you want ANY $500 class gun to shoot like a $3000 class custom rifle, you would need to rebarrel it.

Agreed the 223 will be your best price for ammo, even reloading. But that is a rather light round for 600 yards. Doable for sure, but the 308 is a better round at that range. I agree, stick with one of those 2.
consider stopping by your local Big5 as they sometimes have used/surplus rifles that are a great bargain.
I personally like my Savage way more than the Remington lineup. If you like to tinker with triggers, barrels, parts and such, the Remington is the way to go. But that Savage accutrigger is sweeeeet, right out of the box.

I think Mossberg rifles are not bad at all. I saw a new Mossberg 308 Win rifle for $309 at my gunshop today when i was buying a SIG P220 Combat. I almost bought it. But... I refrained myself.

8mm Mauser shoot now and sporterize as you go. Can even gunsmith to another caliber if you want.
Under $300, so room for scope and ammo.

We ruled out skinny "sporter" barrels when it was determined that he wants a target shooting gun.
The Tikka T3 lite is a skinny sporter barrel that's perfect for a walking-around hunting rifle, but no good for a target shooting rifle.
