    Brossiah,

If your budget is $5k then you have more than enough to get a nice action and whatever barrel you want, and still have plenty left over for optics. XLR says the Carbon will fit the Defiance Deviant, Bighorn Tactical/Sporter, Stiller Tac30, and Surgeon 591 actions. Pick whichever one you like and talk to someone like Randall or Ken or Skeeter about what barrel and trigger would be appropriate for what you want to do.

Because this is my first bolt action rifle, I think I'm just gonna stick with the 700 AAC-SD. I found a brand new one for 775. This will give me space to get a sick muzzle brake, a nice trigger, and nice optics. When I get better, I can easily upgrade to the defiance build you mentioned.

Unfortunately, I'm in norcal so going to Van Nuys will be a little hard.

If I can find a legit smith here in Norcal (daly city area, willing to travel an hour or so) then I will go with this build.

I really like the defiance receiver but I just don't have a smith to make everything work nicely together.

I think you can honestly get one for a chunk of change better than 775. Check around for deals on it, and they often have 75-100 dollar rebates. Get the action trued, and get a good brake. Shoot the crap out of it till you're wanting to do a 6.5 or other round when you get accurate and learn how to shoot a bolt.

I haven't lived in California for very long.
Since its online, how would it work ??
I don't think any local gun shops price match ....

                Great find by the way.
And what do you mean by a "good" break??

Good muzzle brake. Something to reduce recoil.

Most shops will charge a 25.00 fee to take a gun in from the internet, and the DROS. Anyone who wants to charge 100 or more, just leave. Lots of shops want your business but will not get close to the price so they charge an arm and a leg to do the FFL transfer. I avoid those shops at all cost.

And generally, just look on buds when you put it in your cart and it will give you a list of approved FFL's to do the transfer through.

Where in Nor Cal are you? I'm in the Sacramento area and have a Rem 700 Milspec 5R. If it's close enough to be worth it for you, you're welcome to put a few rounds down range. It's had work done, but will still give you an idea of what the rifle is capable of especially with a $5k budget. I'm into mine a little less than that with good glass.

I think it's probably the best out of the box rifle going right now.

EDIT: Just saw you said Daly Cit area. A bit of a drive, but the offer stands.

Regarding the brake, is there such thing as a bad brake ?? I figured as long as I stuck to name brand brakes I shouldn't have an issue.

Thanks for the heads up. 145 dollars is huge in savings. Could be ammo!! I will definitely check out the shopping cart thing once i get home.

Please, for the love of all that is broly, do not install the steaming turd that is the SPS aac-sd barreled action in your new $900 chassis. If you can get a 5R, jump on it like it is the last Smirnoff Ice at the end-of-semester kegger. Or you can have someone put a new barrel on a 700 action for you at a broriffic price. There's a whole brocean of options out there, figure out your budget and go from there.
now this is a quality post.

I'll be another vote for a Remington 5R Mil-Spec if you can afford it. It's about another 400 more than the base models, but a much better barrel, better barrel contour, and a solid setup in general. It is a great drop-in action/barrel that will shoot FGMM 168gr SMK's at sub MOA all day long with the right shooter.

Another option is a Remington Sendero, or a 40-X. Those are both insanely accurate factory rifles. Any of the 3 would do you quite well.

I ALMOST...and I stress ALMOST bought the 5r today. I had the option of getting a new one with a threaded barrel for 1700 today...but I wanted to get good class.

I ended up going with a Leupold MK4 4.5-14x50 M5. Got a pretty good deal on it @ 1500 brand new. Went with leupold rings and a leupold base.

Also picked up a Timney 510. I plan on going to about a 2.5 pull.

                                Atlas QD bipod.

And lastly, the rifle was a brand new 700 AAC-SD.

Ended up spending about 3200 and still gotta pick up a couple extra mags and a little rail for the XLR chassis to mount the bipod.

Pictures to follow on 17 November. I am stoked.
                                Thanks everyone for the help.

I still need to find a sexy muzzle brake.

I do like form over function because I'm a loser, but having good function and looking good is always a plus.
                                Any recommendations?
