I don't know what that means, but I have not replied because I was too busy in the shop fluting bolts.

Yes, that is a good point. Ancient times they had less way to express their art. Say in Japan, Weapons, what else ?? But aesthetics do not play a functional role in the weapons. That's why you can also go to where there aren't museums, that's where they lost the war and were conquered by the guys with more and better weapons, nothing fancy. The side spent it's energy on making effective use of what it had. Not museum pieces.

You respect the workmanship on a Japanese sword, but I think one will get laugh at a fluted bolt. Except Randall's.

I do actually like the fluting of the Accuracy International bolts. It's the only fluting I have seen to serve a function, but it has no cosmetic value.

ElkHunter pay no mind to the trolls that 1) didn't even understand the OP was talking about fluted BOLTS and 2) bring into the thread posts about how great old calibers are.

Combinations of bias and narrow-mindedness make for poor contributions...

I always thought the purpose of fluted bolt was to shave weight off.

I brought up the old caliber in the context of functionality and basic firearm progression in relation to technology. I posted the link to the J Lorenz shooting to emphasize that.

Rick Beginski shot a 2.xxx group on range 12 back in 08 09 with a 6.5X55 but it was part way on the backer and not totally on the target.

Thanks for just the facts. Please visit the reloading forum and try to post facts there.
Fluting of a bolt is pretty cheap until you have to sand blast and blue or re-coat it as Randall has posted. My fluted bolts are all single shots and don't see inclement weather.
If you like the look plan ahead and get it done when building the rifle so you don't have to refinish finished parts.
This just to save some money.
If money is not a problem flute and finish at will.

I want fluted bolts so it looks like my bolt is still moving forward as I'm closing down the bolt.

And BAT action bolts and Defiance bolts are almost all fluted or have some sort of pattern on them if you buy them from a retailer (not a special order).

I just stuck with the fluting for consistency, but would have no problems running a standard bolt.

I don't care for fluted or grooved bolts generally on a bolt action rifle. I often have to remove a loaded round from the chamber or, since I reload, move to catch my empty as I cycle the bolt and try to avoid it being ejected. I've been known to catch my flesh in the groove or flute and either pinch it or slice a chunk off (in the case of a Wthby.) A smooth bolt doesn't get me. Just my personal pet peeve.

I have been caught by a flute a few times while lapping a bolt into an action.
