Not too be a stickler fjold but on my 1994 model 70 the tag specifically says pre 64. I understand what you're trying to say though. I want the new claw style extractor because I don't want to bubba a true pre 64. Anyway any suggestions on what I'm trying to do?Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

I believe Winchester did advertise the "Classic" action as "Pre-64" interchangeably until somewhat recently if you look through their historic products. My Stealth says "Pre-64" as well and it was manufactured only a few years ago. Currently they call them "Pre-64 Style" to help differentiate.sigpicComment

It's hard to find a CRF Winchester actions alone and a stainless one would be extremely rare.
I would just watch all the auction sites for any stainless donor rifle and start from there. Winchesters rifles tend to be kept for hunting and aren't tinker toys like the Remington and Savages so you don't see them parted off too often.Frank

Another possibility would be to go with either an action or full build from Montana Rifle Company. Their actions are modified/streamlined Model 70 style and I believe fairly priced. They have both short and long action available.sigpicComment

I'm actually gonna see if I can get a factory tour with Montana rifle company when I'm in Montana next month. Funny you mention that. I just have my heart set on a model 70 as it was my first center fire gun and I refuse to ruin it but I wanna be able to take a model 70 to sac valley.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

I have the Montana Rifle Company stainless, short action from the first year of production, it is similar to the Model 70 with a slightly different footprint. The MRC actions are about 1/4" longer than the corresponding short and long actions of the model 70 and MRC also offers a PH model that is a true magnum sized actions for the 505 Gibbs and similarly sized cartridges.Another possibility would be to go with either an action or full build from Montana Rifle Company. How do you like it compared to the Winchester action?I have the Montana Rifle Company stainless, short action from the first year of production, it is similar to the Model 70 with a slightly different footprint. Mine was in the first production run (serial Number 0005) so the finish wasn't as nice as the Winchesters. The trigger is a dream though as it is a copy of the original Winchester trigger and any good gunsmith can get it down to a 2-3 Lbs. and breaking like an icicle. The action and the magazine are 1/4" longer than the standard short action so I can shoot the intermediate length cartridges like the 6.5x284 and seat the heavier bullets out longer.
I like the three position safety, also.
It's as accurate as the shooter and ammunition allows and I'm just wearing out it's second barrel using it for hunting and 1,000 yard match shooting.Frank

I just got off the phone with Matt of Montana rifle company very pleasant conversation. He said they don't give factory tours due to insurance reasons but he will let me poke my head in and give me free reign of the show room. I'll report back as much as I can. Super excited.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

That's going to limit you. Most of the aftermarket M70/FN stuff is for the FN-SPR length actions (M70 WSM length). They're very reliable, very smooth but a bit more work to fit a barrel to than a M700 or Savage. What kind of performance are you seeking? Chances are there is a SA cartridge that will fit the need.Luck favors the prepared.

Yeah that's why I was looking at the laredo. It's got pretty much everything I want just would have to sell the stock and drop it in a chassis. I think that's the route I'm gonna end up taking since I didn't have much luck on here with suggestions.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.
