More precision style pre 64 model 70

I saw that what is my gun worth thread and it rekindled my desire for a Winchester model 70 akin to my sendero. I'm looking at a stainless donor action on gun broker and also the model 70 laredo. I'd prefer stainless but am considering the laredo because it's pretty much ready to rock and roll out of the box. Anyone have any experience or suggestions? Would a donor action be better suitedfor what I want to do? I want a long action pre 64 model 70 for sure and may go with a chassis down the line. As always any insight is appreciated.

You might consider looking at the latest version of the 70 Stealth. Depending on what caliber you want to go with you might have some more luck finding one because they were produced much more recently than the Laredo (2011). I have one that I bought brand new just last year so they are out there. Its a .308 built on a short magnum action with a 26" 1:12 heavy barrel. I personally love it. It will also fit in stocks or chassis designed for the FN SPR line of rifles as I believe they are made with the same tooling.

A true pre 1964 action, or one of the newer pre '64 style actions?

All M70's built prior to 1964 were "long" actions, even the .22 Hornet chambered rifles. Things changed when Winchester went from controlled round feed to push feed, and they had both long and short actions.

The extraction on the newer actions is awesome. It throws 30-06 cases farther than any rifle I own. The controlled round feed action is why I went with the Winchester over a Remington.

My first centerfire gun was a pre64 model 70 bought new in the nineties. I'm very familiar with the claw. I don't wanna bubba that either that's why I'm looking at buying another one.

Your first pre'64 Model 70 was bought new in the 90's? You do realize that pre'64 means made before 1964 right?

You seem to be using "Pre-64" as a generic term for the CRF action. The Pre-64 Winchesters with claw extraction were made until 1963, then Winchester converted to a pushfeed action in 1964. In 1992 Winchester went back to a new "Classic" action using CRF and a new anti bind bolt. These were made in New Haven CT until 2006 when the factory was closed. In 2006 Winchester licensed Browning Rifles (owned by FN Herstahl) to produce the Model 70 in Morgan Utah. In 2006 FN moved production to South Carolina in the FN factory and in 2013 production was shifted to the FN Herstahl factory in Portugal.

The term "Pre-64" is used only for the guns made until 1963 in New Haven, CT.
