I thought if you use the gun for CCW, you can't modify the internals?

Yeah I might just go ahead and just get the CA complaint version if it's an easy fix to be able to still shoot it without a magazine in it. I think that's the only difference besides the hole on top to check for a round in the chamber.

I know several LEO's. Could I have one of them buy a regular shield and then transfer it to me? Are they exempt from the CA version just like they can get Gen 4 Glocks or w/e?

That's up to the issuing agency, and possibly your perception of possible risk if you might be prosecuted.

Man I can't wait to relocate outta this **** hole state. I love the weather and the women are beautiful here but I can't stand all this ridiculousness with firearms legislations. Firearms owners are almost treated like criminals here.

I'm looking at trying to get a non ca compliant S&W M&P shield for CC in Orange County. Don't know if I'll even be able to since SSE went away but am wondering if I'd even be able to register it as a carry gun once I get my CC license.

If anyone knows how I can go about getting a non ca compliant shield as well that would be much appreciated. I missed my original appt due to military training last year and now I have to wait until Sept this year for my new appt. Lame!

first of all, yes, you can qualify with off-roster handguns on your OC permit.. OCSD does not discriminate in that manner.. however, the gun must be registered to you in CA and active in the AFS for them to include it on your permit after you qualify with it at your OCSD approved training facility..

as mentioned, in your case, finding a ppt for a reasonable price or qualified family member gift from out of state would be about your only choices..

ppt does have to be in CA, both parties present at the FFL.. guns shipped from an out of state seller [ffl or private party] to a CA ffl for a CA resident buyer, is considered a dealer transfer, not a ppt.. even a gun shipped from a CA resident to another CA resident becomes a dealer transfer..

now the intra-familial transfer has specific rules but may be an option for you..

I managed to get one last year as an SSE. A no thumb safety model to boot. Hard to believe what people are asking for them now.

In other words, any link between you asking for the gun and your LEO friend buying the same gun after you asked and selling it to you might be deemed illegal.

While it is ridiculous, it is what it costs.

When I bought my new non-CA Shield in 2013, IIRC I paid around $700 after DROS, tax, and SSE fees from a popular FFL.

When you live in CA, just be prepared to be violated.

OUCH! Did they just order it in, or did that include a transfer from another vendor?

I SSE'd at the end of '14 and it was $500 OTD.
