I just put an old credit card between the plunger tube and slide lock. Push the slide lock straight down and the card depresses the plunger. Takes 2 seconds and no chance of the dreaded idiot scratch.**** your feelings!Comment

The really easy way to avoid the idiot mark is to use an FLGR with a takedown hole drilled to capture the recoil spring onto the rod. Then, when replacing the slide, there is no spring force at play and you can just position the slide, lay the gun down on the bench, and use both hands to position the slide stop and push it in. I don't know about filing away metal on the end of my slide stop, since I never scratched one in 25 years, I don't see the need.Last edited by bountyhunter; 01-25-2015, 4:16 PM.Comment

I recently met a shooter that had just purchased his first 1911.
While bragging about how much he knew about his new baby he proceeded to "field strip" it for me.
Whilst re-assembling the pistol, the slide release was giving him trouble.
I suggested he halt work and drop some oil down the slide stop plunger hole and work it in there. Wa-lah! SS went right in.
Bone dry and had never been detail stripped either.
Just a little bit of lube in the right place performed a miracle.
