Not sure what you mean by large capacity. At this stage, Perhaps a Thompson SMG style handgun would not work out for you.

Most every handgun I like in .45ACP, is small capacity. Including this nice NIB Glock in stock right now (but not for long) at mparms

OP, if you want a double stack .45, I would get the following:

Glock 41. The Longer barrel and Rail would go great with a rail mounted flashlight.

If getting a Gen4 Glock, I'd suggest the 41 over the 21, just since ... you have to SSE it anyway, and you can get gen3 21s here.

I'd pick the Glock for sure (I have a Gen2 21). Sure it has a fatter grip, but ... 13 rounds standard capacity... ah never mind...we're in CA.
Well, a 10 round G21 is more reliable (in my experience) than a 1911 with a 10 rounds magazine.



Also, don't rule out moon clipped S&W 625.

I lean towards heavier guns for home defense since those are generally smoother shooters. I don't see the benefit with a polymer for home defense unless you currently carry a polymer gun and don't have time to train on a different platform.

Also, if I had not shot a gun in 15 years I would get a 9mm since that costs less to train with and generally requires less training.

A little knowledge does go a long way. Several years ago, before SIG redesigned the 220 to have an external extractor, the 220 had an internal extractor. The 220 and 220 Carry had enough problems that the top SIG armorer in the US said to stay away from 220's because they had a design flaw in the gun that was causing reliability problems. In terms of actual numbers of guns having problems, it was stated that there would be no repeating of that number, that it was not a lot, but it was enough to garner him stating to stay away from the current 220's. This was all over SIG forum for quite a long time.

I just wanted to point out that the Sig 220 internal extractor issues were only related to the all stainless 220 ST and not to the all German made models.

With the $200 rebate HK is currently running, I would think the HK45 should fall well under 1K.

If you're looking for a smaller gun, the USP compact .45 is another option.

It seems like if you've ever wanted an HK, now would be the time to buy one with the rebate going on.


I just checked Budsguns... the HK45 is $1002 and the USPc is $864. Both come in pretty well under your 1K limit after the rebate, in fact you can get tax and DROS too.

I like my HK45, but my small-handed wife does not. She much prefers my P226, so you might prefer the P220. Both are going to be right around a grand, so with taxes, fees, etc., you're going to be over your 1K limit with either gun if you buy new.

The first 45 I owned was a Glock 21sf and loved it but traded for an XD45 and Loved it, sold it though duie to financial hardship and now have a Glock 30sf. Of the three I think my favorite is the 30sf because like the op I have small hands and its a perfect fit. Also it goes bang every time I squeeze the trigger

As you can tell everyone will give you a different recommendation because that gun works for them. It may not work for you, go to a range where you can try a variety of the mentioned pistols. See what works for you, what works for me may not be a good option for you. Try before you buy and base your purchase from first hand experience, not what someone on the Internet told you.

This is a tough decision but i would probably go with something that has a rail on it for personal/home defense. Concealment is not as big of an issue since you will be on your property so a full sized handgun benefits.

kimber Custom TLE/RL II will meet your budget plus if you find a good deal you should be able to afford a streamlight.

Glock 21 and you will have enough money left over for whatever you want to do to the gun.
