Ivory grips- worth it?

Agreed. The ivory above is beautiful, but I'd prefer an American material on a gun like that.
Also, I'm just sentimental about the plight of elephants (call me squishy, I don't care) regardless of when the ivory was harvested.

Have you ever read "heart of darkness" by Joseph Conrad? Very good story about colonial ivory traders.

I got mastodon ivory grips...pretty expensive but it was from a long since dead elephant. It's a gorgeous investment in my opinion.

Eagle no longer makes a SUPER Blackhawk grip.
Shame since I have a old set of them and know they do make good grips.

Hogue makes a good cocobolo monogrip but it's just not fitting with the engraving, wouldn't look right.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk engraved by Weldon Bledsoe. The gun is unfired but the grips are kind of beat. I was thinking of getting some ivory replacements. This gun is a pure safe queen....for now.

What are the downsides of ivory grips??

I wouldn't get real ivory, out of principle. But bone or antler would be neat.

I don't think it's really worth it, personally, versus some nice wood grips. I don't like the look but that's a matter of personal taste.

That wonderful engraving cries out for the pop that ivory grips will provide. I sent a Colt SAA to Nutmeg Sports to be fitted with ivory grips. Unfortunately it is in the safe and I do not have pictures. Ivory from pre-ban stockpiles is 100% legal. Plain grips will run you about $550 + shipping & insurance. You can do a 1911 for $300.
