YES! Get a Coonan .357. I LOVE mine. NO ONE else will have one. They are MUCH more comfortable to shoot, come with a .38 spcl spring to shoot lighter loads but can also shoot the heavy duty .357 which is a real show stopper at the indoor range. The company started making them again recently. You can order them new, but will have to go through an out of state FFL first b/c they won't ship directly into CA.

If you mean the DE, you are right. There ARE lots of drawbacks which can only be overcome IF you simply want it enough. But as I said, since there is a DE on the list, I wouldn't use up what little time I had left getting something you can get next year.

I shot a 44 mag years ago and it recoiled like a 45ACP . Would I buy one ? No. They Seem like a novelty. I would take one if somebody gave me it as a gift.

Its because people are trying to shoot it with SF wrist or under performing ammo. You can pick them up for deals due to peoples ignorance. I picked up a .44 with 6" and 14" barrel. They don't make the 14" anymore and I got if for $under 9, with custom wooden case. the only issue was the old magazine follower that was being used. Shoots like a charm and never malfunctions. When I picked up my first, it was .357 and I was using ammo that was not appropriate and had many malfunctions. Once you take the time to read up on them, it would be rare for you to have a malfunction. Don't have them with mine at all.

Why all the hate on DE's? I think its ignorance and jealousy. Plus people keep passing on old FUD about feed issues and finicky conduct related to ammo...all of which has gone to the way side since the DE's were fitted with the newer style extractor spring (actually a piece of plastic)

I am biased. I have four of them.

So let's look at the facts....

Are they practical? Practical as in for what? Carry? No...Home defense...Yes. Take to the range and have a blast...Heck yea. the heft of a DE makes 44 mag seem like 45 acp, and 357 seem like 22 lr.....

Are they pretty? Some people say yes, some no. Why let others sway your opinion. I like the way they look.

Are they accurate? Well, the last DE I bought, which was the gold 44 was taken to the range immediatly after getting out of jail. I put 4 rounds down range at 10 yards. There were two holes in the paper about 1/2" apart...I thought, this gun is a POS. than I brought the target forward and realized the first three shots had made one slightly out of round hole. I am not a super shot, an average bullseye shooter (NRA sharpshooter rating). A DE has a long sight radius and a steady platform, so it shoots better than most other guns.

would I use this gun for competitions? No, the gun isn't exactly great for quick movement.

But they are fun guns, and most guys who hate on them don't own one, never owned one, and probably can't spare the cash to have a $1,200.00 range toy so they hate on them.

I think they are worth it. And every kid or adult I have ever taken to the range always says the funnest gun I have is the DE...that makes it worth it to me.

you only would need to go SSE if you want a finish that isn't available normally. the only ones in CA are 44 in either Brushed Chrome (incorrectly called Stainless at most shops) or Black.

if you can afford to buy one and the extra barrels, it is fun as hell to shoot, once you learn to handle the weapon properly. more accurate and reliable than most people would care to realize. a lot of people who belittle them have either never fired one, or weren't able to handle it properly.

People don't realize that there is a big hunting culture that uses handguns, and that the DE is one of the premier hunting pistols

Bought a new one couple of months ago and got the .50 barrel separately. Factory .44 may be why some hate on them. My hotter reloads cycle her fine.
With the .50 barrel on she's a head turner at the outdoor range as well.
Always a fun way to finish up a pistol day.

I did the opposite, I bought a .50AE DE and bought a .44 barrel, love taking it out to the desert to blow things up, (and yes I clean my mess and haul it out)

Unless, of course, you want one of the nicer looking (IMO) finishes like polished chrome or bright nickel, or any of the others. I think that I have finally decided on the polished chrome for myself, after flip flopping many times between that and the bright nickel.

To the critics, I agree that it's not the most practical gun you could own (somewhat of a novelty) and if you could own or afford to buy only one handgun, it wouldn't be my first choice either, or even my 10th. But fortunately, we can own as many handguns as we want, even in California, at least for now. Maybe (hopefully) the OP has other, more practical and versatile pistols already. If so, and he can afford a DE, he should go for it.

Not every gun you buy has to be a daily shooter or has to be versatile. And despite what some think, not every pistol has to be a 1911! I, for one, want only specific models, in specific calibers and specific finishes for my collection, none of which will ever be any revolver (except a Rhino...maybe) or any traditional 1911 (probably), anything two-tone, or any duplicate of anything else I already own. Yes, I do realize I just alienated more than half the board (my interest in guns alienates most of my home state anyway, so, I'm used to it).

The DE is well made, reliable, accurate, and just plain bad *** IMO. It is an iconic gun that I have to have in my collection and I for one won't be settling for the vanilla or chocolate finishes that CA says should be just fine (the new addition to the list, burnt bronze, is pretty cool too) I will get the one that I like because I have that option for now, and I think that finding less common models/calibers/finishes for PPT after 2014 is going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very expensive if you do find them.

Ok, I will admit that I was tempted to say, "just don't get the gold or the striped one". Coz I mean, why? But to some here, the gold is what the polished chrome is to me, beautiful. To each his own!

I support the right of some people to have bad taste and reserve the right to make fun of them for it!

The only people that are really in the wrong are the people who want to dictate and legislate what we can or can't own, like or do based on their opinions/beliefs...oh, and anybody else that disagrees with me, of course!
